I just told a new client that I was like one for those guys who surveyed a crime scene to piece together what happened. Does that make a forensic scientist or a detective? Not sure. Either way, I take the evident, the information, the data (if you will) and put them together to find the story. YOUR story. I can remember years ago watching Horatio Caine on CSI Miami and Mac Taylor on CSI New York and their teams piece together what happened based on forensic evidence. These days, my new favorite detective show is Will Trent. Trent is a detective with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. He's a little eccentric, haunted by past memories, dating a fellow officer, with a tiny dog that is his kid. He always wears a three piece suit. He is an odd mixture of a metrosexual and an alpha male. He seems to have an almost psychic like abilities to see things that happened visually in his mind. He can inject himself into the scene and actually visualize what happened and these "visions" are usually right. What I have decided as a business storyteller is that I have to be part detective, part scientist, part therapist and part writer. In some ways, I have to be like Will Trent, visualizing what happened. I am putting together the story based on data (information) that I can find. Of course, that takes research. This is why I say a copywriting project has three phases: Research, Strategy & Execution (writing). This matters whether it is a website copywriting project or an origin story project. Recently, I sat down with Rob Cairns to talk about origin stories on his podcast, The SDM Show.?It was a great conversation as I just wrapped up writing one for him. It is more of building a narrative than writing. It was good for him and good for me.
