Anyone who has had a chance to work with a Copper Mountain Technologies' VNA knows that CMT is one of those paradigm-busting organizations that truly has built the better mousetrap; this small firm has moved the industry in a new direction. What people may not have as much experience with is Copper Mountain's approach to customer service. So let me tell you about our week: Our friends at Diamond?Microwave Chambers came to us with an urgent requirement for third-party RF shield measurements at a newly erected EMC chamber in Ottawa. On short notice we loaded?up our IEEE-299 testing gear and made our way to Ottawa. We put together a test plan on the spot, selected appropriate test points, and got to work. They say all things come to an end, but I did not realize that includes ancient HP spectrum analyzers. The HP 8563E that for over 30 years had contributed to my upper body fitness finally gave up the ghost. At a customer's site, on a short schedule, in another country?no less, and half our shielding test setup just quit on us. But all was not lost--I had thrown our brand new Copper Mountain VNA into my computer?bag, thinking there might be time to do some interesting?comparison measurements. So, we were certainly not dead in the water, but our Model SC5090 covers 300kHz to 9 GHz, and we had committed to shield testing from 1 - 18 GHz. We were still facing problems. Dave Raby is Copper Mountain's sales manager for our part of the country. He'd always been quick with answers to my questions on the SC5090, so with nothing to lose, we emailed Dave to ask if by chance he had a spare 18GHz VNA laying around that he could pack up for export to Canada for a few days, but only if he could do all that right now. I was not expecting he did, but I wanted to be able to tell Diamond Microwave and their customer that we did try to locate the test equipment we'd need to honor our commitment. Just a bit over 24 hours later, we were taking data with a loaner S5180B 18 GHz 2-port VNA. Dave wouldn't even let me pay for the shipping. I've always been proud of our customer support, at The Howland Company and now Howland & Lawrence. But holy smokes, Copper Mountain has set the bar pretty high. We have a new role model. Thank you Dave and Copper Mountain!
