Copper Canyon Press welcomed new leadership in May—Ryo Yamaguchi as our Publisher and Julie Christine Johnson as our Director of Finance & Operations! In his new role as Publisher, Ryo Yamaguchi will guide the Press’s strategic vision, including community collaboration, audience engagement, and donor development and partnerships. Yamaguchi has over ten years of experience in publishing. He formerly served as Copper Canyon Press’s Publicist, and he was also the Sales and Marketing Director at Wave Books, also an independent publisher of poetry. Before that, he worked for several years as Promotions Manager at the University of Chicago Press. He is also a poet—author of THE REFUSAL OF SUITORS (Noemi Press) and with poems published widely, including The Best American Poets 2020—and he has worked extensively as a freelance book critic at outlets such as Harriet Books from the Poetry Foundation, the Boston Review, and Michigan Quarterly Review, among others. In her new role as Director of Finance & Operations, Julie Christine Johnson will oversee all fiscal operations of the Press, process royalties and subsidiary rights, serve as the human resources executive, manage the Press’s physical facilities, and steward the Press’s grant application and management activities. Johnson brings thirty years of experience in higher education and non-profit program management. She is the author of two novels, THE CROWS OF BEARA (Ashland Creek Press) and IN ANOTHER LIFE (Sourcebooks), as well as numerous short stories and essays on writing craft. A summer reading list recommendation: the Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Tradition” by Jericho Brown. This incredible collection of poems dives into the intersection of Blackness and queerness in America using natural imagery and famous poetic references to describe Brown’s experiences. #PrideMonth #BookRecommendations #SummerReading Copper Canyon Press https://bit.ly/3x8PmRd https://bit.ly/3RgDa7N

Dear Poets and Translators, Copper Canyon Press deeply values our Open Reading Period, as well as the poetry and individuals that this program allows us to encounter. However, we publish just a few titles each year and currently have a limited capacity to accept additional manuscripts via Submittable. As a result, we are postponing our next Open Reading Period until further notice. We recognize that this news comes as many of you are preparing your manuscripts for submission, and we apologize that this announcement could not be made sooner. Please note that this is not a suspension of our Open Reading Period. We are committed to maintaining equitable and accessible paths to publication, and we will reopen our Submittable doors as soon as possible. In the meantime, thank you for your patience as we use this time to attend to manuscripts currently under contract, and thank you for your interest in submitting to Copper Canyon Press. Happy pub day to WHAT COMES BACK by JAVIER PE?ALOSA M., transl. by ROBIN MYERS! Featured in separate sections, original Spanish poems and Robin Myers’s English translations highlight tender ruminations on loss, memory, and communion. Just as landscapes witness and “preserve what happens along the length of them,” so do people. We watch as travelers navigate realms between the living and the dead, past mountains and dried-up rivers to map, trace, and remember the past and future: https://bit.ly/3TCAGCu
