"...the vast majority of people aren’t ready to receive criticism unless they feel safe with the person providing it." I really appreciated Sandy's post bringing this HBR article to our attention--the need for feedback and DEI often collide, but they don't have to! Great article with good tips for creating feedback "loops" that take psychological safety AND sensitivity to diversity into account when giving and receiving feedback.

Who can you start mentoring today? While many of us know the benefits of having and being a mentor during our working years, I think it's time to point out that when we retire from our first (or second!) careers there are still many opportunities to be that special guide to others following behind. This article on STEM mentoring highlights the need in one area--but as our country rides the current wave of aging and retirements we can do better across the board with passing on our wisdom.

Are university staff & faculty prepared to weather the sea-change that's happening in higher education in 2024? In a Forbes forecast of the major challenges facing universities today, Michael Nietzel identifies five trends with major implications for staff and faculty: --Changes to admissions policies (DEI is one of many) --More (and intense) oversight from outside entities --The effects of AI on curriculum and processes --Changes to curriculum in response to lower admissions (3 year college, anyone?) --Continuing budget challenges related to lower enrollment, inflation, etc. All this has me wondering if colleges are keeping up with the leadership development needed for those on campus who are responsible for ensuring that the sea-change doesn't swamp the boat. Love to hear thoughts from those in the mix!

“The search for spirituality brings us down to earth, plants the feet firmly on the ground, and allows a vision of self as it is, as we are—imperfect and ambiguous.” Ernest Kurtz What a powerful description about the work of spirituality. It gets to the core of the central questions we must tackle in life. At times we are not ready to explore them and postpone them for a later time. However, they will arise again, inviting us in. Don't Let Leadership Burn You Out! It feels like you're always working, and you never have time for yourself. You're exhausted and overwhelmed, and your job is starting to take over your life. This isn't sustainable! You can't keep pushing yourself and taking on more responsibilities without eventually burning out. Without making changes, building stress and anxiety can affect your physical, mental, and emotional health. Your relationships may suffer as a result of your over-commitment to work. And if you're not careful, it could lead to burnout. To break out of the cycle, it's important to acknowledge the emotional weight of leadership and practice being mindful of your well-being. How do you do this? ●?????Recognize that emotional labor isn't just a "soft skill" or something you can do in your free time. It's an essential part of leadership and needs to be treated as such. ●?????Model self-compassion for your team. Demonstrate to them that taking a break, stepping away from work, and focusing on something outside work is okay. ●?????Prioritize your emotional well-being. Take time to practice self-care and make sure you're getting enough sleep, eating healthy meals, and taking breaks throughout the day. By taking the time to focus on your emotional needs, you'll be better equipped to manage the demands of leadership. You'll be more productive and effective in your work, and you'll feel less overwhelmed by the daily grind. How can you create boundaries to prevent yourself from burning out? #emotionalintelligence?#leadership?#burnoutprevention

I asked?DALL-E Open Ai?to “create an image of a group of Americans talking about politics,” and I had to laugh out loud at this result.?When was the last time you talked about politics with a group, and it felt this friendly and optimistic? As we enter this Presidential election year, I wonder about our collective ability to have meaningful conversations that are BOTH candid AND respectful.?I volunteer for?Braver Angels, whose vision is to “Build a House United.”?A lot of the skills I present in workshops are very similar to the skills I teach leaders for having workplace conversations where varied perspectives lead to tension, and people don’t show up as their best selves. If you’re interested in learning some of these skills, I’m moderating a free Braver Angels workshop called “Skills for Bridging the Divide” at?Frederick County Public Libraries?in Frederick, Maryland on 27 January.?Join us to practice having depolarizing political conversations. I can’t promise that your dialogues will all end up as friendly as Dall-E imagines, but you’ll have a better chance of conversations that help BUILD, rather than BREAK APART, relationships. I took this photo on a fall trip to the Southwest. I was standing in the 900-year-old ruins of a Pueblo Great House, wandering through room after room with doorways aligned. In the quiet that morning, I felt the pull to walk through the tunnel of doors and explore the variations in every room that opened up. The Ancestral Puebloans who lived here left it all behind in the late 1200's, presumably moving south because of a great drought. I couldn’t help but wonder how it felt to leave the comfort these structures provided. But their descendants think of the Great Houses as only a temporary stop on a larger journey. New possibilities emerged only by leaving the stability of the old behind. What doors are emerging in your life, pulling you toward some new opening? Are you listening to the call? You want to be successful in your career, but you feel like you're holding yourself back. You've probably heard that leaders should be approachable, but what does that mean in practice? Despite having ambition and drive, many aspiring leaders struggle with being relatable and building relationships with their team members. When leaders fail to be approachable, they risk alienating their team and hindering the organization's success. A lack of leadership can also stifle creativity and innovation, further impeding progress. To successfully lead a team, you must be able to build and maintain relationships. There are a few things you can do to become more approachable and relatable to your team: ●?????Show vulnerability: Leaders don't always have all the answers, so don't be afraid to ask for help or admit when you don't know something. ●?????Demonstrate empathy: Being empathetic towards your team members can help build trust and create a safe space where they can share their thoughts and feelings. ●?????Listen: Listening to your team members is perhaps the most important way to become approachable. When they know they can voice their opinions without judgment, it helps create a culture of open communication and trust. By taking the time to be approachable, you can create a positive work environment where your team members feel heard and valued. This encourages collaboration and creativity, leading to better results for everyone. How else can you foster an environment of trust and collaboration on your team?

While visiting Hawaii recently I took part in a beautiful morning Hawaiian ritual to prepare for the day. The ritual involved sitting on the sands before the sea and bringing to mind all of your ancestors and then anything getting in the way of you being aloha to others. After a welcome chant one enters the waters to cleanse. They believed that this was like entering the amniotic fluid of your mother once again and an opportunity to be reborn for the day. We had the honor of Auntie Kehaulani Kam leading our ritual. The words of the blessing are beautiful. E ala e, ka lā i ka hikina, Awaken/Arise, the sun in the east I ka moana, ka moana hohonu, From the ocean, the deep ocean, Pi‘i ka lewa, ka lewa nu‘u, Climbing to heaven, the highest heaven, I ka hikina, aia ka lā, e ala e! In the east, there is the sun, arise! It reminded me of the importance of ritual and intention in the lives of leaders. What daily rituals help you lead as your best self? #source?#retreat
