Artificial intelligence (AI) technology could potentially improve the detection and outcomes of lung diseases such as COPD worldwide by improving early diagnosis, watching for worsening disease, and starting treatment. In one article, researchers discuss how AI technology can help with diagnosing and monitoring COPD. This can be done by including AI reviews of medical imaging (X-rays, CT scans), patient histories, blood work, and lung function tests in a doctor’s evaluation of patients. This could also be useful across the globe including in countries with less medical resources. Common symptoms include breathlessness, frequent coughing, wheezing, tightness in the chest, and fatigue. Common first symptoms include an inability to walk up stairs without getting winded, and difficulty blowing out the candles on your birthday cake. Don’t ignore the signs. Acute exacerbations or flare-ups of COPD are a major cause of hospital admissions, and despite treatment, they can further worsen the patient's condition, resulting in a higher risk of death. At present, it is still difficult to identify how severe a patient’s exacerbation will be and their risk of dying. To address the above issues, researchers in China studied cases of patients experiencing acute exacerbations from January 2012 to December 2018 and pulled 90 different patient characteristics from the electronic medical records database. Then, through a rigorous selection process, a set of 34 key features to study were identified. These features were used to develop and train 7 machine-learning computer program models to focus on predicting the need for intensive care unit admission and the likelihood a patient would die in the hospital. Read what they learned in Development and Validation of Machine Learning-Based Models for Prediction of Intensive Care Unit Admission and In-Hospital Mortality in Patients With Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in the latest issue of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases: Journal of the COPD Foundation. Today is World COPD Day! Join us to #SpeakUpforCOPD. Despite its massive impact, COPD continues to be underprioritized, underfunded, and undertreated across healthcare systems globally. This #WorldCOPDDay, we are urging health care professionals and policymakers to take action by implementing standardized quality measures for COPD diagnosis and management. Consistent care is a core element in improving patient outcomes and ensuring that everyone, regardless of location, age, gender, or economic background, has access to the right care plan and support. COPD should no longer be sidelined. Join us in our efforts to empower patients, advocate for change, and act to improve care. Lend your voice and #SpeakUpforCOPD by visiting speakupforcopd.com to learn how you can make a difference in advancing the future of COPD care. #COPD #Advocacy #Patientcare #HealthEquity

Is there a link between the amount of omega-3 in a patient’s blood and the severity of their COPD? In one study, researchers found that people with higher levels of omega-3 in their blood seemed to have better lung health, even after controlling for many related risk factors, such as an individual’s socioeconomic status (a person’s standing in society based on their education, where they live, their occupation, their financial situation, and their access to resources) and comorbidity (having additional health concerns or diseases). Specifically, they experienced fewer flare-ups of their condition and reported a better quality of life related to their lung health. This finding is significant because it suggests that what we eat, specifically including foods rich in omega-3 like some fish, may support improvement in the health of people with COPD. This research adds to the growing evidence that diet plays a crucial role in managing lung health, particularly for those with conditions like COPD. It opens up the possibility that, in the future, dietary changes could become a part of how we manage COPD, alongside medication and other treatments.
