The UNFCCC has released its latest quarterly update, highlighting major climate developments from October to December 2024, including the outcomes of COP29 in Baku. The update from Executive Secretary Simon Stiell emphasises that the goal of $300 billion annually will underpin concrete actions and implementation. Mr Stiell highlights that the goal comes as part of broader efforts to mobilise $1.3 trillion per year, ensuring essential financial support for vulnerable communities facing the worst impacts of climate change. Beyond finance, the update underscores the strong progress made in Baku with regards to the breakthrough on Article 6 to enhance carbon market mechanisms, and advancements in Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs) to strengthen accountability and progress tracking. Looking ahead, Mr Stiell concludes that collaboration will be essential and that the COP29 and COP30 Presidencies, together with the UNFCCC, are committed to ensuring that commitments made in Baku translate into tangible progress in the coming year. As the global climate landscape evolves, ensuring the successful delivery of these commitments will be critical to accelerating climate action.
