Ireland is implementing an SMS Sender ID Registry to combat text message scams, which caused €300 million in harm and affected 365,000 people in 2022. The registry, announced by ComReg in April 2024, will create a secure database of legitimate business SMS senders (Application-to-Person messaging). From February 2025, SMS providers can pre-register business customers' Sender IDs. By July 2025, unregistered Sender IDs will be labeled "Likely Scam," and from October 2025, messages from unregistered IDs will be blocked completely. This system aims to restore trust in SMS as a reliable communication channel. https://lnkd.in/esaC5MGE https://lnkd.in/e4YH9bJG
Business SMS messages often include a Sender ID – a name (not a phone number) to indicate who sent it. If your organisation sends text messages from an SMS Sender ID to Irish mobile numbers, your SMS provider needs to pre-register your Sender ID with ComReg. Instruct your SMS provider to pre-register your details with ComReg by 25 February 2025, or risk your text messages being blocked from October 2025.
