Happy #NationalAdoptionDay! Coordinated Care is honored to be the only health plan supporting and serving Washington’s children, youth and families in foster care, with Apple Health Core Connections (AHCC) coverage. Our Adoption Success program within AHCC, is designed to help adopted children and their families with staff who are trained through the National Adoption Competency Mental Health Training Initiative. We partner with families to provide resources and support for the physical and emotional health of our AHCC members. Thank you to all the caregivers, partners and adoptive families who care for Washington’s youth in foster care! As part of our Strong Youth Strong Communities (SYSC) initiative, we recently reconvened with over 50 community partners, government agencies, and elected officials to continue the conversation around how we can better meet our youth’s mental health needs across the state and identify gaps in care. At this gathering, we followed-up with what students’ voiced at our SYSC youth mental health summit we hosted earlier this year. Thank you to all our partners for the work you do in our communities to empower teens! It was an inspiring day and we’re looking forward to continuing working together to improve teen mental health.

In honor of #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth, we are exploring the importance of traditional foods in Indigenous cultures. Long before Europeans colonized, Indigenous diets and life ways included wild game, fish, and many plants. These foods were an important part of cultural practices and ceremonies and contributed to the health of Indigenous Peoples. But colonization disrupted access to traditional foods, leading to government-issued rations for Indigenous Peoples which affected their health. Traditional foods, as defined by The Assembly of First Nations, come from local plants and animal resources – they are not only healthy but environmentally friendly. These foods remain an important part to Native Americans cultural identity.

In preparation for the harvest season, Coordinated Care celebrated the East Tacoma Community Garden ribbon cutting with Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department (TPCHD) and the Eastside Family Resource Center a few months ago.
