As a member of the Opportunity Finance Network (OFN), we want to offer ecstatic congratulations to them for receiving a major award from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the Clean Communities Investment Accelerator (CCIA) as part of the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF). This funding was created to help finance the clean energy transition in low-income and underinvested communities nationwide. OFN was awarded $2.29 billion and we consider it a priority to support these initiatives by deploying capital and other resources that contribute to climate resilience. We want to take this time to encourage co-ops in the northeast to think BIG about what projects they could implement to reduce their carbon footprint. "Cooperatives were crowdfunding before crowdfunding was a thing," Micha Josephy of the Cooperative Fund of the Northeast shared with NC3's Executive Director, Katharine Gilman, last week. Our conversation centered on how the world of cooperatives and cooperative development intersects with community capital. There is clear values alignment in terms of building a more democratic economy, so we will continue the conversations around integrating cooperative models in NC3's educational materials and informing CFNE cooperatives about community capital strategies. Certainly only the beginning - what are your thoughts on engaging communities in investing in their local cooperatives?
