Nannie Helen Burroughs ensured that the co-op’s surplus was divided into two funds: one for emergencies and one for education. The split reflected Ms. Burroughs’ purpose to improve economic well-being in her neighborhood, but also to spread the gospel of cooperation across the city. As news about Cooperative Industries began to spread, Ms. Burroughs' reputation as a co-op leader and advocate grew. It was a familiar role – using her voice to uplift Black Americans – this time through cooperatives. ??: Library of Congress

Nannie Helen Burroughs was convinced that the government should support Black businesses. She worked for two years to secure Federal funding and won a $20,000 grant. The grant enabled the co-op to grow – members bought a farm and started a consumer cooperative. By 1963, the renamed Cooperative Industries of Washington DC had 400 members. ??: Library of Congress

Taking inspiration from the Rochdale Co-operative Society of the District of Columbia, Nannie Helen Burroughs founded her first cooperative in July 1934. The aim of the Northeast Self-Help Cooperative was to create jobs for Black women, as well as the unemployed, unskilled, and disabled. Within six months of its founding, the cooperative was the largest sewing factory in DC with 50 members. ??: Richmond Public Library

In October, five #coopheroes will be inducted into the Cooperative Hall of Fame. Follow along as we introduce each inductee and highlight their contributions to our cooperative community. September is dedicated to Nannie Helen Burroughs. Nannie Helen Burroughs was a great American intellectual, orator, educator, and activist of the early 20th century. She was also a pioneering cooperative leader. The story of how she employed cooperatives to achieve her goals is an inspiration.
