  • "In mid-December, the commodity market price for coffee reached its highest point ever, capping a year of significant price fluctuations. This historic high is a crucial moment for the industry—one that impacts everyone from coffee farmers to coffee drinkers. However, even with these high prices, when adjusted for inflation, coffee farmers are still earning less than they did 40 years ago." The recent surge in the commodity market price presents a nuanced challenge for all those involved along the supply chain, from farmers to importers, to roasters and eventually consumers. If you care to learn more about the situation, please check out our roaster member, Wonderstate Coffee's blog, which presents a very thorough overview.

  • New to Cooperative Coffees? Roasters sometimes ask us to find another home for coffees they are committed to. Included in our offerings this month, 100 bags of washed Ethiopia Yirgacheffe from the growers at Negele Gorbitu! With notes of lemon, malt, chocolate, nougat, and black tea, get it while you can! • With most agrochemicals being derived from oil, the only truly sustainable method to fertilizing crops is through the natural biological process: microorganisms decomposing organic matter in compost and mulching. Currently, around 40% of the world's soils are degraded, highlighting the pressing need for soil regeneration in securing a sustainable future for humanity- and all life- on this planet. Did you know that organic fertilization and mulching are among the biggest drivers of soil carbon sequestration and storage? With a lens to yesterday's World Soil Day, we continue to champion the organic smallholder farmers around the globe dedicated to preserving and renewing healthy soils for future generations - despite a market that often overlooks the value of their contributions, prioritizing short-term economic gain over long-term sustainability. Ultimately no one is more invested in maintaining healthy, productive soils than the small producers whose livelihoods depend on them. Hence why we follow their lead in defining business climate action and fund farmer-to-farmer training on organic best practices. This year, we sponsored 24 farmer leaders from 8 cooperatives across Latin America to train with our friends at Clave de Sol in Honduras. They focused on the role of humans in farm ecosystems, soil health, carbon sequestration, biodiversity, food security, water harvesting, and pest management. The takeaway for all participants was clear: there is no treasure in the world more valuable than biodiverse soil rich in organic matter. “You have to give to receive.” – Fredy Perez, Clave de Sol

  • On spot this month from Coop Rio Azul?in the Jacaltenango valley in western Guatemala is a washed coffee with notes of cherry, dark chocolate, almond, brown sugar, nougat, and plum. This coffee is excellent both in blends or as a single origin. Try it in a french press to emphasize the syrupy body and sweet finish! We imported our first container of Rio Azul coffee in 2006 and have been savoring their fine coffee ever since! If you are looking for an excellent Guatemala to feature, try this one out by following the link! https://lnkd.in/gbUY-yvf ??
