关于我们
Akana is the outcome of a merger between two professional services firms – Cooper Zietz Engineers and Cascade Design Professionals – both Native American owned, both leaders in their field. The merger cemented a long-term business relationship, expanded the range of our individual service capabilities, and created opportunities to enter new markets. As one entity, Akana can now serve clients through every stage of a project, from planning through design, construction and commissioning.

Herb Fricke had the opportunity to talk with the Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs about his Native roots and the importance of Native American Heritage Month. Akana is proud to be a part of these conversations, which foster understanding, connection, and empowerment within our communities.
Part 1. In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, we are pleased to highlight our member - Akana. Based in Portland, Oregon, Akana is an architecture and engineering firm that plays an important role in this observance. Led by Herb Fricke, a member of the three affiliated tribes from Fort Berthold, North Dakota, the firm reflects the integration of indigenous perspectives in architecture and engineering. Herb’s Rikara heritage and connection to the earth lodge people demonstrate a profound respect for the environment and community—core values of Native American cultures. Celebrating Native American Heritage Month allows us to acknowledge the challenges faced by indigenous peoples while also honoring their resilience and contributions to society. This month serves as an opportunity for everyone to deepen their understanding of Native American history and contemporary issues, promoting respect and awareness across cultures. If you're out there, see if you can catch them between chargrilled oysters and gumbo breaks! Is anyone else from the SAME Portland Post going? #SAMESBC24

As part of our nationwide Facilities Condition Assessment contract with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Rick Unruh, P.E. and the team visit many places. Here's some of the FCA team at Pictograph Cave State Park in Montana, an archeological site that features drawings (some over 2,000 years old) from Indigenous people.
