Cathy Englehardt, of Hatfield, was one of the first patients at the Mass General Cancer Center at Cooley Dickinson Hospital to undergo scalp cooling, an option for patients who are starting chemotherapy and are concerned about losing their hair. After a sharp-eyed radiologist picked up an anomaly in Cathy's routine mammogram, the Breast Cancer team was able to catch breast cancer early and start treatment, which included surgery to remove the lump and then chemotherapy. As a caretaker to her two young grandchildren with special needs, Cathy was concerned of worrying them when she'd start to lose hair from treatment. Instead, she was able to try the Mass General Cancer Center at Cooley Dickinson Hospital's scalp cooling treatment, which helped her retain 50-60% more of her hair. “We tend to tell our hair stylists what’s going on in our lives. If you are facing cancer and chemotherapy, you may want to give this program a try. I didn’t know if it was going to save my hair.” Learn more about scalp cooling: https://spklr.io/6048xEqu

Kevin Whitney, DNP, RN, CEN, EMT-P, who has been serving as interim chief nursing officer at Cooley Dickinson Hospital and the interim vice president of community operations at Mass General Brigham since May 2024, was recently honored at the Solomont School of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts Lowell Alumni Awards celebration. Through his recent work with Mass General Brigham Healthcare at Home, where he served as chief operating officer for the last two years, he has helped shape the future of healthcare. Kevin's dedication to service is highlighted as a model for students and fellow alumni. Congratulations, Kevin!
