Marsha P. Johnson was an activist for the Gay Rights Movement throughout the 1960s and 1980s. Assigned male at birth, Marsha embraced her identity as a Black transvestite woman, drag queen, and activist after moving to New York City in 1963 (Biography, 2024). The term transgender was not widely used during this era, instead the word transvestite was used. During this time period in the state of New York, the presence and activities of the LGBTQ+ community were criminalized. Additionally, the gay rights movement often excluded the transgender community. To overcome this exclusion, Johnson and Sylvia Rivera founded STAR, Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries, an organization that advocated for the rights of transgender youth and provided shelter and other resources to LGBTQ+ youth. (Biography, 2024).?Marsha became a champion in speaking out against the exclusion of the transgender community from the Gay Rights Movement and she remained steadfast in the fight for equal rights. In 1990, diagnosed with H.I.V., Johnson used her diagnosis to spread awareness about the AIDS epidemic. She spoke about her diagnosis to inform the public that they should not be afraid of those living with HIV/AIDS. She is quoted for saying her ambition was, “...to see gay people liberated and free and to have equal rights that other people have in America” (National Women’s History Museum, 2022). We honor Marsha P. Johnson during #BlackHistoryMonth for her impact on human rights and the LGBTQ+ community. #HumanRights #CelebrateTogether #BlackExcellence?
