When communities need help as a crisis strikes, the local people who work to help (like CERT, local govt) are truly leaders because of their knowledge of the people, environment and needs. What they need is the strength of resources to relieve the crisis. It's important that large aid and government response groups tap into the leadership and knowledge of the local groups that stand up to respond. How do they communicate with them? Old way: Telephone if possible, email sometimes, wait until outside teams arrive on scene. New way: Get in contact with all relief and resource teams in advance of the crisis, chat with them, built relationships/trust and plan for the next disaster. Then when it hits, the main teams are already in place. Where do they chat? Until now....no where. Now: Aid Arena It's a simple concept..... help helpers converse and collaborate. Local is the center, with the "big orgs" rolling in to help virtually before, during and after crisis. https://aidarena.chat

?? Stronger Homes, Safer Communities ?? This week, the new 2025 edition of the California Wildland-Urban Interface Code (CWUI) was adopted. The new wildfire building code relocates current wildfire resiliency related sections into one central location within Part 7 of the California Building Code. The various wildfire-related sections include existing Chapter 7A of the Building Code, Chapter 49 of the Fire Code (vegetation management around homes), and Chapter 337 of the Residential Code. The structure of the CWUI Code is modeled using the International Code Council’s International Wildland-Urban Interface Code. While the requirements remain the same, the reorganization and consolidation into one code is a major milestone for California making it a simpler process for builders and local officials across the state. The new code takes effect on January 1, 2026. The CAL FIRE – Office of the State Fire Marshal has a long-standing Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) workgroup that completed the proposal for the adoption and will continue to meet to review and propose revisions. The success of the code since its adoption in 2008 has been the development process, which has always included all stakeholders at the table including fire officials, building officials, building industry, researchers, academics, manufacturers, as well as the public. Wildfires have devastated California, but stronger building codes are making a difference. Homes built under California’s wildfire regulations are 40% more likely to survive than older homes, according to a 2021 study. ?? Why it matters: ?? Fire-resistant roofs and other features protect new homes. ?? Even older homes benefit—if they’re near a newer home, their survival chances increases. ??
