Allow me to introduce Colonel Karl Hartmann.
Colonel Hartmann is a LLM-supported avatar, the result of two days of playtesting a #wargame for #PME in the Bundeswehr (German Federal Armed Forces) with experts in AI, XR, and software engineering. Currently, he provides players with in-depth knowledge of the rules. In the near future, he will have the capacity to perform additional tasks.
The BWI GmbH team is training Colonel Hartmann in doctrine and working on ways to provide him situational awareness of the game, enabling him to articulate the rules and causes of action in the most effective manner, providing substantial support to players. In addition, he will support the facilitator in the adjudication and provide valuable insights into the decision-making process during the game for analysis.
However, it is important to note that he will never replace a player. In wargaming, human decision-making is paramount, and relying on AI is not a learning strategy that we wish to pursue. Military leaders must exercise critical thinking skills independently.
I would like to express my sincere thanks to Frederic Jakobi and Thomas Altmann for leading the development of the game based on Sebastian Bae's Littoral Commander. Matthias D?ring, who leveraged the impressive capabilities of BWI GmbH and brought in experts such as Tadele Zei?ig Zeisig, Jonas Thiessen, Arne Menzel, Niklas Knaak and Manuel Schmidt to assist, made the biggest difference in the digitalization.
We are still a long way from the end of our journey!
