Why are CROs getting beat up in the stock market?
Last week, as Medpace and Icon got hammered in the stock market, I saw a fair bit of "the CRO market is changing" sentiment. Lots of folks seem to believe (or at least want to believe?) that the current CRO-based trial model is unsustainable and some big changes are happening. But reading the quarterly reports from those 2 companies, I didn't see that much gloom and doom? Yes, both CROs performed below expectations, but expectations were actually very HIGH, based on a projection of double-digit growth. Both of them now seem to be tracking towards mid/low single digit growth for next year - so sure, their stock price may need some adjusting but they're still growing, and neither signaled any kind of major shift in their strategies or offerings. So is there really an industry transformation on the near horizon, or mostly business as usual? I found this article fascinating, but not sure about the evidence showing a real change. E.g., the author notes 35% of companies growing their functional services needs versus 29% growing full service CRO needs. That's interesting, but doesn't feel tectonic?
