I recently had the chance to hit the dog-friendly Folly Beach near Charleston SC with Snoopy, the unofficial mascot of Content Science! Before and after all the jogging, biking, and kite flying, we caught several bright sunrises and sunsets. Those lucid and colorful views are extra special coming from Atlanta, where forest tends to block the horizon. I found myself feeling grateful for the opportunity that can come with each sunrise. This year hasn't gone exactly to plan,?which is extra frustrating for?a?strategist. But learning to?let go of what doesn't work and what I can't change as the sun comes up has helped me focus on different opportunities. And many of those opportunities have worked out well. I also found myself grateful for the reflection that can come with each sunset. It's one thing to process the acceleration of digital disruption and volatility around us *intellectually*. It's another thing to live with it, operate in it, and feel the consequences of it. It's easy to focus so much on what's going wrong or could go wrong or has to change or needs to improve that sleep doesn't come easily. So, I've been learning to focus on a few wins or signs of progress as the sun goes down so I can go to sleep with some satisfaction. If you're celebrating Thanksgiving tomorrow, may you have a day filled with light, opportunity, and reflection! Another quote of content genius! Rachel Doria of Kohl's explains that the question today isn't whether to have a content operation. "The reality is that if your organization delivers content today, then you already have a content operation—the question is whether or not it has been intentionally designed. Organically-grown content operations do deliver content, but they’re painfully wrought with significant rework, manual steps, inconsistency, gaps, a long time-to-market, and a lofty (but hidden) price tag. What is not understood cannot be managed. So take the first steps. Identify people and map processes together. Every organization has to start where it is before it can get where it wants to be."
