Bridging the gap between Economic Developers and Site Consultants across North America

关于我们

We are a national consulting firm bridging the gap between leading economic developers and site selection consultants, providing a platform to gain transparent feedback, invaluable insight and lasting business relationships. This joint venture between Southwest Michigan First and Development Counsellors International brings more than 30 years of direct industry experience to the table. Both groups have seen first-hand how economic developers and site selectors can find themselves on opposite sides of the road. Through exclusive educational and networking events and services, Consultant Connect not only gives economic developers an inside look into the world of site selection—it gives them the applicable intelligence necessary to propel their communities forward. Consultant Connect is not an an association—it’s a call to action. Let's bridge the gap.

Ever wonder what it’s like to be at a Consultant Connect Summit Event? Last week in Greenville, SC, was a great example. Over two days, nine economic developers and 16 site consultants met for industry insights and relationship-building. Economic developers led the discussion focused on how the political climate is affecting the industry and how the nature of data center projects are changing—we could have talked for hours. ? After a full day of discussions, we gathered for a Keipi dinner, a toasting tradition from the Republic of Georgia. With a Tamada (toastmaster) leading the way, we raised our glasses to the experiences, challenges, and people that shape our work. Consultant Connect Summits are about more than industry insights—they’re about building real connections. If you’ve been to one, you know. If not, consider this your invitation. • Site selection and economic development aren’t just about data and incentives—they’re built on trust, collaboration, and relationships. The best projects happen when economic developers and site consultants move beyond transactions and build true partnerships. When that happens, communities thrive, businesses succeed, and growth becomes sustainable. At Consultant Connect, we bridge the gap between economic developers and site consultants through events and consulting that spark real conversations, foster relationships, and provide direct industry insights. • We’re excited to highlight another #NATop50 economic developer: William (Skip) Scaggs, Executive Director at the NMIDA (North Mississippi Industrial Development Association)!?? The deadline for North America’s Top 50 Economic Developer Awards is quickly approaching! Nominate an economic developer—including yourself—here: https://lnkd.in/gqQreHxc. Want to know if your pick made the list? Stay updated by signing up for our emails: https://lnkd.in/g47AK_dR Now, let’s learn more about Skip: ? How has economic development changed since you entered the field? Part of my “rubber chicken circuit” speech is about the level of competition in economic development. Over the past 25 years, this intensity has only grown. The evolution of our industry continues—what was once a high bar, like an optioned site with basic due diligence, is now barely a starting point. As communities work to create competitive advantages, they simultaneously raise prospects' expectations for risk mitigation—not just regarding land, but also workforce availability and, increasingly, power supply, which is a much tougher challenge to tackle. ? What shifts do you feel will happen in the profession over the next five years? Our industry has continuously pivoted with technology (remember the three-ring binder proposals?), and that will persist. What was once cutting-edge will soon be the baseline cost of admission. However, the biggest shift I foresee is the continued transition away from fossil fuels. This transformation will create short-term winners and losers. Navigating and mitigating these shifts across our communities will be unprecedented—at least in my lifetime. I wasn’t around when the last horse and wagon were sold and serviced! ? What is your favorite characteristic of your community or region? Why? For most of my career, I’ve worked in smaller micropolitan and rural areas. I love the deep sense of connection within these communities and our collective willingness to support one another. I rarely encounter community leaders who are in it for themselves—there’s a true desire to foster growth. ? What led you to economic development? What’s kept you here? I went to college thinking I’d become a teacher. There was always a call to serve in that decision, but after student teaching, I realized I needed a different career path. My father was a volunteer with the local chamber, and that world appealed to me. I took an unpaid internship in Birmingham, and that was my start. The opportunity to improve people’s lives has allowed me to scratch that early teaching itch—plus, the pay, the diversity of projects, and the evolving community needs have kept me engaged and passionate about the work. ? #economicdevelopment #econdev #siteselection

The Consultant Connect team is always eager to celebrate the incredible women shaping economic development and site selection. But there’s no place we love doing it more than at our annual Women’s Summit! This year, we gathered in Las Colinas, Texas, with the generous support of our host sponsor, Greater Irving - Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce. The theme? Flourishing in leadership and economic development. Our time together kicked off with an insightful workshop led by Carla Sones, guiding attendees through what it means to flourish where you are and establish deep, lasting roots. At every Women’s Summit, we incorporate an element of restoration and renewal, and this year was no exception. Attendees had the opportunity to break into small groups with site consultants, sharing unique experiences that fostered deeper connections and lasting memories. This year’s summit was nothing short of extraordinary, and we’re already counting down to the next one! A heartfelt thank you to all the economic developers and site consultants who joined us, and a special shoutout to our sponsors, DevelopAbilene and Salt River Project, for making this event possible. #EconomicDevelopment #SiteSelection #WomenInBusiness #Leadership #Flourishing

  • We’re kicking off the week with a #NATop50 Celebration! Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Stevie Phillips, Senior Economic Development Representative at Cooperative Energy. Stevie’s passion for economic development is undeniable, and we’re thrilled to share her story. ? Looking back on your career so far, what makes you most proud or fulfilled? I’m most proud of what our team has accomplished over the past 10 years as a standalone department. We serve the largest geographic service territory in the state with the smallest staff—yet we’ve become a powerhouse in the industry. It’s incredibly rewarding that our names have become synonymous with Cooperative Energy Economic Development. ? How has economic development changed since you entered the field? I started in economic development at just 21 years old! Entering the profession in the Deep South as a young, outgoing woman came with its challenges. While barriers still exist, I’ve seen the field become more diverse, with a broader range of voices and perspectives shaping the future. ? What led you to economic development? What’s kept you here? Like many, I stumbled into economic development. But once I realized the profound impact this work has on my family, neighbors, and community, I knew I was in the right place. Every day brings something new, and knowing that my work helps make our state a better place for my son keeps me going. ? Who has been your greatest mentor? Greg Word was my first boss in economic development and is now my son’s Godfather. His influence on both my professional and personal life has been immense—something I know many who have met Greg would agree with. He’s a joy to be around, a creative powerhouse, and one of the best in the business. ? What is your economic development superpower? Connecting the dots! Whether it’s knowledge, people, or opportunities, I thrive on learning, problem-solving, and bringing the right pieces together. And if I may add a bonus superpower—I’ve perfected the Irish exit, which I absolutely count as a skill! Know someone who deserves to be recognized as one of North America’s Top 50 Economic Developers for 2025? Nominate them here: https://lnkd.in/gJyVPezs #EconomicDevelopment #EconDev #Leadership #NATop50
