As we move towards integrating the foreign activities of Business Finland into the diplomatic network of Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, it is essential that Finnish diplomats have a solid understanding of BF’s priorities and substantial programmatic work at its Helsinki HQ. Over the past couple of days, I had a number of highly useful meetings with BF colleagues in Helsinki. Big thanks to Director-General Lassi Noponen for your time and for sharing your vision for Business Finland. At Consulate General of Finland in New York, we stand ready to work with BF and other stakeholders to increase U.S. investments to Finland, among other issues. Thank you Ilkka Homanen, Head of Hydrogen and Batteries, Kirsi Kokko, Head of Defense and Digital Resilience (together with Kimmo Kanto and Markus Ranne), Jussi ?kerberg, Head of Flexible Energy Systems, and Janne J?rvinen, Mission Lead, Digitalization, for the very interesting briefings and discussions. I learned a lot about the important work that you do! Finally, it was an energizing afternoon yesterday at the launch event for your five missions, outlining Business Finland's long-term strategic vision and discussing the collaboration possibilities for finding solutions to pressing global challenges. It was also a wonderful networking opportunity!

It was a pleasure to host an inspiring group from Aalto Entrepreneurship Society (AaltoES) at the Consulate General of Finland in New York! ?? We discussed Finland’s strengths, the challenges we face, NYC business landscape, and how Finnish companies can successfully enter the U.S. One interesting takeaway that stuck with me: Finland excels in R&D, but we’re not fully leveraging these investments into driving growth and building scalable businesses. R&D should act as a catalyst for new business creation. Companies should be seen as vehicles for expansion—as platforms for innovation that can amplify Finland’s global impact. Simply put, we gotta go get the bag!?? Hearing from the future (and current!) movers and shakers of AaltoES was energizing. Your drive and passion are exactly what Finland needs to thrive on the world stage. Together, we can build a future where Finnish innovation doesn’t just stay local—it conquers the world. Thank you Tuija Karanko, Secretary General at PIA - Finnish Defence and Aerospace Industries for a highly useful meeting and conversation this morning. As we try to double down, as a country, to increase our exports and helping Finnish companies grow, the defense, aerospace and dual-use sectors must increasingly be in focus. At a time when “Si vis pacem, para bellum” rings truer than in a very long time, strengthening our industrial base is good not only for our security but also for our economy.

Slush is nowadays a bit like Davos or the New York Climate week in the sense that it brings together an impressively wide range of people and companies. At times I felt that half of my contacts in New York came to Helsinki for networking, deals and more. Huge thanks to Michael Student Sullivan & Worcester LLP for inviting me to a networking dinner. Always a pleasure to meet Jaakko Sulander Nokia. Also hope to continue discussions with Scott Kaufman from Sullivan about how Finnish companies could learn from their peers in other countries regarding successful U.S. market entry.

Great to reconnect with Reggie Rusan ????, Chief Commercial Officer of eSystems Nordic, whom I first met when serving as Ambassador for Innovation in Helsinki over five years ago! Thank you for sharing your insights about the challenges and opportunities for expat business leaders in Finland. Great quote from you: “To succeed, you need to adapt to the environment and not expect the environment to adapt to you.” — So true, but I wish more Finnish companies were able to adapt, even a little bit more, to the talent we so dearly need from abroad. Thank you also for eSystems “Sweet Automation” chocolate bar by Fazer. As I said, Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland should have these bars with an uplifting wrapping to share, be it in New York, Nairobi or Nicosia!
