"We all live downstream." We're thinking of our friends in the mountains who are experiencing a lot of flooding - with the worst rains and winds yet to come. If you're high and dry, check out this great story from Conserving Carolina that features one of our longtime RootEd teachers, Jeanne Ferran, and her Polk County Middle School students. You might think from the video that Jeanne is a science teacher or even a carpentry teacher since her students have designed, built, and continue to add on to an outdoor classroom, but she's an English teacher. She weaves the community and nature into everything she does. Thanks to Conserving Carolina for capturing this story, and stay safe out there.

It could be my age, but good press feels more real when a) it comes off an actual printing press and b) lives in the communities we serve. Make Your Move! Thirty years ago an underdog team of students, teachers, and partners from northeastern North Carolina were presented with a challenge: Convert a gas-powered vehicle to electric power, and compete against high school teams along the east coast in a competition assessing speed, endurance, and teamwork. To the surprise of many...they won. Inspired by their story, and the need for new sustainable and equitable transportation solutions, we are launching a student challenge called Make Your Move! We are recruiting teachers, partners, and sponsors who want to be part of the rich history of transportation and education innovation in North Carolina! Buncombe County Schools wanted to create some Saturday morning camps for students in 4th-8th grade. They wanted learning experiences that were fun for kids and teachers, accessible for families, connected with local people and places, and integrated with math and reading standards. Our team at Constructive Learning Design/RootEd worked with BCS and partners like Moogseum, Center for Craft, and Well Played Board Game Cafe to design and deliver the Make Your Mark! camps. It was a soup to nuts kind of project - from creating the concept and marketing materials to recruiting students and teachers, and from designing and co-teaching the curriculum to coordinating field trips and telling the Make Your Mark! story (see video below). Now more than ever, schools and districts need to create learning experiences that students, families, and teachers love, and they need to tell their story. Reach out to learn how our team can help!
