    Last Week in ConTech | Helping more people to use tech in construction | AECOM

    There’s a new playbook for ConTech startups going to market. And it looks a lot like traditional construction growth strategies. A recent trend in construction tech has been startups, instead of selling their solutions to the industry, vertically integrating to become tech enabled contractors. This approach involves the startup integrating their proprietary software, self performing and capturing the upside by delivering at lower cost. The challenge? Scaling. With SaaS, once built, you can service 1, 10 or 1000 customers with the same product. But as a contractor you're constrained by the size of your labour force. It’s a problem traditional construction firms have faced for decades. Take AECOM. They were formed in 1990 as the merger of 5 local entities. To expand, they needed to acquire talent and capability quickly. 35 years later, they’ve acquired over 50 firms, have 51,000 employees globally and generated over $16.1 billion in revenue in 2024. This strategy allowed AECOM to acquire customers in new markets quickly and maximise profits via economies of scale leading to a valuation higher than the sum of the individual companies. And it’s a lesson startups are heeding. For example take 1KOMMA5° who install solar panels in homes across Europe. To expand, they’ve bought up small installer businesses offering equity as part of the package. They then supply hardware and their proprietary software (Heartbeat AI) to deliver the service at lower cost vs incumbents. With other ConTech startups like Roofer.com who expanded to Texas by acquiring one of the largest roofing contractors in the region, this approach could be a catalyst for tech adoption. Incumbents could soon face a new kind of threat, venture-backed startups growing via acquisition, digitizing their core services and delivering them at a lower cost. Imagine if the next Procore Technologies didn’t sell to construction firms but became a contractor itself, acquiring SMBs across the US and forcing 100% adoption of their platform. It would set a new industry standard, for tech implementation and quality and force every incumbent contractor to rapidly digitize just to compete. --- Want to stay ahead of the curve on construction tech news and trends?
