?? New study reveals barriers HBCU students face in medical school admissions ?? Students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) often face challenges like limited access to mentorship, academic resources, and financial support when pursuing medical careers. The study highlights the urgent need for systemic changes, including better pipeline programs and targeted support, to create equity in the medical field. Key findings include: 1. Disparities in Opportunities: HBCU students often have less access to resources like academic advising, mentorship, and preparation for medical school admissions, compared to their peers at predominantly white institutions. 2. Impact of Financial Challenges: Economic disparities, including the high cost of applying to medical schools and attending preparatory programs, further exacerbate inequities. 3. Role of Pipeline Programs: The study emphasizes the importance of pipeline programs and institutional support to better prepare and encourage HBCU students to pursue careers in medicine. 4. Recommendations for Change: The research calls for systemic efforts, including increased investment in HBCU resources, partnerships with medical schools, and targeted mentorship initiatives to address these barriers. It is our mission to work together to bridge the gap and build a more inclusive healthcare system. We all want to access healthcare when we need it, feel seen and heard by our providers, and know that we can cover the bill. Yet discriminatory policies and practices place healthcare out of reach for some of us based on race, income, or geography. RWJF is working with partners to build a fair and just healthcare system that is accessible and affordable for all, a system that rectifies the harms it has caused in the past and prevents future harm by treating everyone with dignity and respect. We're grateful to partner with organizations that are building a healthcare system that serves all of us. From diversifying the health professions, to advocating for people in need of coverage, to providing safe birthing experiences for Black women, these partners are renewing hope in healthcare and working toward a future where health is no longer a privilege but a right. ?? “There’s great diversity within disability,” said Amy Rule, MD, MPH, FAAP. “I think it’s one of the things that can sometimes be both one of our greatest strengths and one of our greatest challenges when it comes to thinking about this on an institutional level. How do we accommodate both physicians and trainees that have such diverse needs?” Accessibility in academic medicine is more than a policy—it’s a priority. At Learn Serve Lead 2024 (#AAMC24), panelists with lived experience, Oluwaferanmi O. Okanlami, MD, MS, Kristin Limpose, and Amy Rule, MD, MPH, FAAP, shared their insights on navigating careers in medicine with disabilities. From breaking down barriers to fostering an inclusive medical education environment, their stories emphasize the essential need for accessibility.
