Be the Chair will be very insightful! ?? We already enjoy having you as part of the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) board, but even more excited to have you begin your new role as Board Chair at #CoSN2025! Congratulations and enjoy the journey! Keith Krueger
I’m heading to the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) 2025 conference, where I’ll do my best to fill the very big shoes of Diane Doersch —an incredible leader and role model—as I step into the role of Board Chair. One thing I’ve decided to do during this journey is launch an initiative called Be The Chair. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to lead on a national stage. The stories will be real, occasionally messy, and always rooted in the experiences that brought me to this seat at the table. Whether you’re leading a national organization or guiding a classroom, I believe we all deserve a seat at the table. And some days? We get to be the chair. More to come soon—including a website, resources, and some stories that just might make you laugh or say, “Same.” For now, I’m just grateful for this opportunity—and for the fact that American Airlines lets me check three bags.

Thank you, Lauraine Langreo and Education Week, for covering the CoSN 2025 National Student Data Privacy Report! The findings are clear: K-12 EdTech leaders need more support in overcoming the institutional barriers to student data privacy. From employee-related issues to complex compliance requirements, EdTech leaders face challenges that prevent effective privacy protection. ?? One thing I love about the SETDA community is its ability to quickly come together to help solve tough problems. So what have our members been looking at since last summer? #Edtech procurement. Is it wonky and complex? Yes. So, we convened those that represent all sides of the decision-making process, from states to developers, to help us unravel it and identify opportunities to improve systems that determine which tools make it to the classroom. While the rapid increase in the availability of edtech and AI-powered tools has enabled more innovative approaches to teaching and learning, it has also presented districts—especially smaller or rural ones—with the daunting task of vetting and selecting those that are both effective and necessary. In response, SETDA partnered last year with leading edtech nonprofits to address these concerns and ease the burden of evaluating and vetting edtech applications and products. Seven key organizations—1EdTech Consortium, CAST (Center for Applied Special Technology), Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), Digital Promise, InnovateEDU, ISTE+ASCD, and SETDA—formed the EdTech Quality Collaborative and have jointly developed five Edtech Quality Indicators (i.e., safe, evidence-based, inclusive, usable, interoperable).? Grounded in those indicators, this new resource from the SETDA State Action Committee is designed to guide K–12 education leaders in selecting high-quality edtech products, offering adaptable questions that procurement teams can incorporate into different policies, processes, RFPs, or state-level guidance and support tools. Find the openly-licensed resource here: https://lnkd.in/g5WSkEWj. Please feel free to reach out to me with questions about how to use and share this resource!

Earlier today, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in "FCC v. Consumers' Research,” the case that could determine the future of the Universal Service Fund (USF).?Before the arguments, Keep Our Communities Connected held a press conference with Senator Markey, joined by members of the Lifeline Coalition (Benton Institute for Broadband & Society, MediaJustice, and National Digital Inclusion Alliance (NDIA) who are intervenors in the case), SHLB Coalition, teachers, doctors, rural healthcare workers, and other community members to advocate for the preservation of USF. Together, we sent a message that connectivity is no longer a luxury but a human right that should be afforded to all Americans, regardless of zip code.
