Improving connectivity and reducing congestion in West Pasco County, Florida, the Overpass Road Interchange makes life easier for travelers. The widened roadway and new I-75 access ramps alleviate traffic on SR 54 and SR 52, creating a more reliable route for everyday commutes. This project reflects the best of design-build delivery—it recently won the DBIA Florida Region Honor Award for Transportation – Structures! Working closely with the Florida Department of Transportation and The Middlesex Corporation (contractor), our team led the design for both the roadway and structures. Through collaboration, adaptability, and careful coordination, the project team delivered impactful solutions for the community. Key elements: ?? Streamlined bridge design and a well-orchestrated construction strategy to reduce traffic impacts on I-75. ? Precision in scheduling and delivery, from right-of-way acquisition to utility relocations, to keep the project on track. ?? Despite a tight 365-day closure for Overpass Road, the project team overcame all delays to reopen on time. #DBIA #designbuild #transportationengineering #consorprojects Project photos courtesy of Fred Ocasio at HNTB.

The startling fact that drives transportation planning and design expert Ben Waldman: the most dangerous thing most of us do daily is travel by car. Getting into transportation engineering started as a “fortunate accident” but became Ben’s life’s work—making meaningful changes toward safer, more inclusive transportation infrastructure in his community and beyond. Read the full feature to discover how… ?? Ben’s work on Vision Zero and Safe Routes to School projects is making a difference in his hometown and beyond, enhancing safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. ?? As ITE Mountain District International Director, Ben is driving safety and DEI initiatives that impact the industry globally. ?? #ITS and big data displayed in dashboards can make transportation metrics actionable and accessible for public agencies. ?? https://lnkd.in/g9fEbrM4 ?? #transportationsafety #multimodaltransportation #ITE #consoratwork

A few weeks ago, some of my CONSOR Engineers colleagues and I took a break from work to go volunteer MaxFund Animal Adoption Center, Denver's largest no-kill animal shelter. MaxFund's mission is to provide adoption services and medical care for all injured, abused, and abandoned animals that come through their door. Our group got the chance to help build new kennels for some of the larger dogs as well as making some of the indoor kennels safer. At the end of our time, we got to spend some quality time with some of the dogs and cats, which was definitely the highlight of the day and made all of the hard work worth it. Big thank you to Casey Zimmer, Elizabeth Bannister, Anna Lundin, Karina Filipovich, Tony Hurd, Abby Walsh, and Madison Burdt for attending. Thanks to CONSOR Engineers' volunteering policy, many Denver office employees have been able to attend various group volunteer activities throughout the year. If you are able, I highly recommend taking some time out of the work week to go volunteer as a group in your local community.

In honor of National STEM/STEAM Day tomorrow, we’re spotlighting STEM professions in construction that bring civil projects across the finish line—from project management to engineering to inspection. With the continued investment in updating aging infrastructure and building new infrastructure for growing communities, these fields offer exciting career paths for students interested in STEM! Our teammates recently connected with nearly 2,000 high school students at this year’s South Florida Construction Career Days, an event hosted by the Florida Department of Transportation, FTBA, and many consultants and contractors. Students got hands-on experience in everything from bridge and roadway labs to mock interviews with industry professionals. The standout lab was the “chocolate asphalt” demo, where students made candy bars using methods that mimic roadway installation. Jeannette Harris, Vice Chair of the Construction Career Days Committee and Florida Construction Services Area Principal at Consor, has been involved in this event since it began in 1999. “What always amazes me is how engaged the students are and how they begin to see possible careers in construction,” reflected Jeanette. “It’s incredibly rewarding to help them discover our industry, and I’ve had students tell me they pursued this path because of this event.” Inspiring students to see their future in STEM roles across the project lifecycle is key to moving communities forward. ?? #NationalSTEMDay #STEM #STEMeducation #construction

What does a thriving transportation system look like? It’s one where pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers navigate safely and seamlessly. Our team’s #collaboration with Contra Costa County on the recently completed Danville Boulevard Complete Streets project in Alamo, California, exemplifies this vision. This once busy, stop-controlled intersection at a local shopping center has been transformed into a dynamic roundabout that prioritizes accessibility and safety by: ?? Engaging with the local cycling community throughout the project to help shape the design, which resulted in a new roundabout that features an adjacent bike-friendly sidewalk for cyclists of all experience levels and improves circulation for shoppers and residents. ??♀?Enhancing pedestrian safety with upgraded crosswalks, sidewalk extensions, and a thoughtfully designed pathway network, which provides seamless access to the shopping center. ?? Incorporating green infrastructure, including bioretention basins and pervious pavers in the truck apron, which maintains mature trees, enhances aesthetics, and protects the environment. ?? Minimizing impacts to businesses by staging construction to maintain access to local shops, especially during the busy holiday season. See the new roundabout in action! Watch as cyclists and drivers navigate this community-centered design that’s making Alamo safer and more accessible for everyone. ???? #completestreets #pedestriansafety #multimodal #ConsorProjects

Creating safe, accessible routes to key destinations for students, parents, and other residents strengthens communities. The new multi-use path along Harvey Mitchell Parkway/FM 2818 in Bryan, Texas, is designed to do just that. Our team collaborated with TxDOT to lead the PS&E preparation for this project under the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). Connecting the community directly to schools and other essential destinations, our approach enhanced mobility and prioritized safety every step of the way. To minimize disruptions, our team implemented work-hour restrictions, pausing activities during peak school drop-off and pick-up times to allow for smooth traffic flow near the intermediate school along the corridor. Finally connecting Central Florida’s 25-mile beltway around Orlando, this 3.5-mile section of Wekiva Parkway in Seminole County added vital connectivity while preserving the area’s natural beauty. This project is part of the final chapter for an initiative first proposed more than 20 years ago to provide a route around the bustling city, which includes Walt Disney World and the seventh busiest airport in the nation. For years, State Route 46 was a bottleneck—local traffic from neighborhoods and businesses competed with long-distance commuters. Creating an elevated expressway that paralleled non-tolled frontage roads for local traffic alleviated that congestion. Our team provided #constructionservices on this landmark Florida Department of Transportation project, which won the SASHTO America’s Transportation Awards for Quality of Life/Community Development, Large Projects category. What makes this project noteworthy: ???? Bike lanes and a wide walking trail that not only add safety but allow visitors to enjoy the scenic surroundings. ?? Permitting and construction approach that mitigated impacts to the environmentally sensitive water basin and river, which also protected bears and other wildlife. ?? Design features and limited overhead lighting for a dark skies initiative that preserve the area’s natural appeal. ? ?????? Public engagement efforts that accommodated community members’ needs and kept them informed throughout construction. ?? Challenging process that maintained traffic flow during construction of 12 bridges, 4 roundabouts, ITS, signage, MSE retaining walls, drainage systems, and major franchise utility relocations. ? Shout out to everyone who contributed to this award-winning project! #constructionmanagement #transportation, #Florida #roundabout #Consorprojects?
