The alteration of natural fire regimes is leading to profound ecological transformations, posing serious threats to biodiversity, and risking species extinction on a large scale. Wildfires are also altering essential ecological services on which humans depend, such as clean air and water supply, soil stability and fertility, carbon storage, ecosystem ecology, and more. It is estimated that 75% percent of terrestrial area on earth has experienced significant change to natural fire regime conditions. Learn more about what we know about the fire ecology of large-scale, destructive fires, and what more remains to be learned by joining the Global Wildfire Collective's inaugural webinar on March 20th! We take rigorous science and turn it into action. Our collaborative platforms empower solutions of all kinds.
关于我们
The Conservation Biology Institute (CBI) provides scientific expertise, social and technological innovations to support the conservation and recovery of biological diversity in its natural state through applied research, education, planning, and community service. We use GIS and remote sensing data to conduct assessments and planning in support of conservation and land use projects globally. We conduct research - alone or in collaboration with others - to actively seek creative new ways to address a wide range of ecological problems from endangered species to regional conservation planning. We develop innovative conservation tools, techniques, and analyses to help organizations, agencies, and companies utilize the best available conservation evidence. CBI is a non-profit 501(c)(3) founded in 1997 in Corvallis, Oregon with offices in California and Washington.

The 2019-20 Australian bushfire season, burned an estimated 24.3 million hectares, destroyed over 3,000 buildings (including 2,779 homes), killed at least 33 people.?In addition to the human impact, the fires were devastating to biodiversity in the region, with an estimated 143 million mammals, 2.46 billion reptiles, 180 million birds, and 51 million frogs killed or displaced. Learn more about the complex set of human, landscape and climactic conditions that led to this destructive fire by joining the Global Wildfire Collective webinar on March 20th! Hear from Global Wildfire Collective's charter member, Dr. Owen Price, Associate Professor and Director in Bushfire Risk Management, at University of Wollongong, Australia, whose work has been instrumental in understanding the causes and impacts of the Black Summer fires. On January 7, 2025, what would become one of California's most destructive fires in history started just outside the Pacific Palisades neighborhood.?A perfect storm of the ignition site's proximity to housing developments, high winds and drought conditions led to 29 deaths, 16,000 structures burned and estimated economic losses of up to $275B.?Humans and wildlife across the region were exposed to high levels of VOCs in smoke and water sources were contaminated.? Learn more about the complex set of human, landscape and climactic conditions that led to this destructive fire by joining the Global Wildfire Collective webinar on March 20th! You'll get to hear from our charter members, Dr. Jon Keeley and Dr. Alexandra Dunya Syphard who study the wildland urban interface in Mediterranean climates such as Los Angeles. Help Preserve Environmental Data According to a New York Times analysis published on February 2, 2025, "more than 8,000 web pages across more than a dozen U.S. government websites have been taken down ... as federal agencies rush to heed President Trump’s orders.”? Already, reports of missing data related to “climate” and “resilience” have started flooding in.? Conservation Biology Institute 's Data Basin platform is well suited to host this type of spatially explicit data and it is free to use.? If you have a background in GIS and would be willing to volunteer your time toward collecting, curating and uploading data to Data Basin to aid in the effort to preserve important climate and ecological data, please contact us at [email protected] and we will be in touch about ways you can contribute to the effort.
