????From brain-invading microplastics to a flower that pollinates itself, recent research is uncovering some wild and unexpected insights. Here’s what scientists have been investigating lately: ?? Microplastics in Mouse Brains We now know microplastics can accumulate in mouse brains, getting stuck in blood vessels and possibly affecting neurobehavior. But do they do the same in humans? Scientists aren’t sure yet. ?? LA Wildfires & Climate Change Climate change doesn’t cause specific fires, but it makes wildfires more intense by driving drought, heat, and strong winds. With global temperatures exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, scientists warn fires like these could become even more frequent. ?? Plants Are Smarter Than You Think! A rare orchid has an appendage that bends to self-pollinate, allowing it to reproduce even when insects don’t visit. A survival hack like no other! ?? Paraparticles: A New Type of Particle? Physicists are re-examining the idea of paraparticles—a potential third type of particle beyond fermions and bosons. Could they actually exist? New mathematical models suggest they might! ?? The Cucuteni-Trypillian Civilization This ancient culture built massive settlements and thrived for centuries—without evidence of a ruling elite. Could they have been egalitarian? Archaeologists are still piecing the story together. ? Science is constantly evolving, and we love uncovering the latest findings with you! Want to dive deeper? Find research-backed insights on www.Consensus.app and check out the full blog post at https://lnkd.in/gwGqBxMb Big thanks to BBC News, Nature Magazine, Rice University, World Economic Forum, Cambridge University Press & Assessment, Science Advances, Scitech, New Scientist, EurekAlert AAAS for their research and publishing that helped shape these insights! ????

A friend recommended Consensus for research, and I have to say, it’s a game-changer! I was working on my current research and needed a tool that could provide me with only credible information and sources. Consensus did exactly that, providing me with published articles and accurate citations that makes researching super convenient and fun. It's like Google Scholar and Chatgpt had a kid. Shoutout to Christian Salem and Eric Olson for creating such an innovative and helpful tool. Can't wait to see it grow! Students take note!

Seeing Consensus being leveraged by clinicians has been remarkable. Doctors are inundated with information and beyond pressed for time. A reoccurring theme we have heard in user interviews with doctors is how frequently they still turn to pure consumer products like Google to source insights - simply because they don't have time to parse through the literature using legacy information discovery tools. Consensus has been able to help bridge this gap between ease-of-use and quality of information. We have a long way to go to in serving clinicians and still have plenty of flaws, but we can't wait to keep helping healthcare workers quickly source evidence-based information. Thank you for the wonderful piece Spencer Dorn ??

Over one million new articles are added to PubMed each year – about two per minute. No doctor can keep up. In my latest Forbes article, I review how doctors like me have historically accessed medical knowledge – and how AI tools are necessarily reshaping how we do it. AI search highlights the tensions between human and machine curation, nuance and brevity, automated and manual processing, and potential machine-generated and human errors. We should be hopeful – everyone benefits when we can tap into collective knowledge quickly and dynamically. A typically skeptical cardiologist colleague of mine called OpenEvidence “revolutionary.” We aren’t talking enough about this topic – these tools are already reshaping our practice. It was super fun exploring this with several industry leaders. Let me know what you think. https://lnkd.in/gV4RwCgv

Interesting science news from around the world. This past month saw nuclear fusion ignition, Blue Zone criticism, a new malaria vaccine, and self-driving rats. ?? Physics: Nuclear fusion ignition advances The US National Ignition Facility achieved six successful ignition experiments, generating more energy than consumed. Could nuclear fusion be the climate-friendly power source of the future? ?? Medicine: Genetically modified malaria vaccine breakthrough A new malaria vaccine using genetically modified parasites shows promise in early trials, potentially offering stronger, longer-lasting protection than current vaccines. ?? Demography: Blue Zones controversy Are so-called ‘longevity hot spots’ based on flawed data? Critics question the validity of Blue Zone claims, citing poor record-keeping and potential fraud. ?? Psychology: Rats driving to happiness Research suggests that rats trained to anticipate rewards and solve challenges may be teaching us about the joy of anticipation and mental well-being. ?? AI: Academic challenges in computing power AI research in academia faces bottlenecks due to limited access to GPUs. Academics are innovating efficient methods, but the gap with industry widens. ?? ??Interesting science news from around the world. This month, we turn back time to see how complex cells evolved, celebrate the success of a world-first therapy to reverse type 1 diabetes, look into electricity treatments for depression, and learn how diamond dust could combat global warming. --- ?? Stem cell therapy reverses diabetes type 1 Last month, a paper in Cell published the findings of a first-in-human clinical trial assessing a new treatment for type 1 diabetes: stem cell transplant. This treatment may prove to be a game-changer for this life-altering disease. ?? Home brain stimulation therapy for depression Around 5% of adults suffer from depression around the world, and about a third of those do not respond effectively to common treatments like antidepressants and therapies. A phase 2 clinical trial published in Nature this month looked at whether a cap-like device which delivers a weak current of 2 milliamps to the forehead, called transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), can offer an effective treatment for depression. ?? Spraying diamond dust into the air could combat global warming The long-term temperature goal of the Paris Agreement, signed by the EU and 194 states in 2016, is to limit global temperature rise well below 2 degrees Celsius, aiming for a limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius. Unfortunately, in June the World Meteorological Organization predicted that there is an 80% likelihood that the annual global temperatures will exceed the 1.5 degree threshold over the next five years. As well as limiting carbon emissions, other strategies, such as solar geoengineering, are being explored to put the brakes on escalating global temperatures. ?? Creating artificial endosymbiosis sheds light on the evolution of complex cells Researchers have artificially implanted bacteria into a fungus, and found that the bacterial cells persist in fungal cells over time and are even passed onto offspring. This implantation, which required the use of a needle that was less than 1 micrometre wide, resulted in a ‘endosymbiotic relationship’. This means both the host fungus and resident bacteria benefit from their close relationship. This experiment sheds light on how the complex cells that make up animals and plants evolved over two billion years ago, and also offers a new avenue to modify organisms so that they develop beneficial traits.
