We have watched companies for years develop their Inclusion and Diversity strategies centered around the concept of Unconscious Bias, but with minimal results. We provide a new way of leading for sustainable results in our teams, organizations, and in society: with Conscious Inclusion. Conscious Inclusion takes a new effort, using new muscles, to create habits and microbehavioral changes that will result in a positive impact on our colleagues, society, and culture. Conscious Inclusion means being aware of and having a commitment to our words, our choices, our decisions, and our actions. It’s an accountability that is not subject to the cloak of ‘Unconscious Bias’, allowing us an excuse based on a history of oppression or stereotypes.     The news on Monday that Harley-Davidson has operated without a DEI team since April, that internal Learning offerings will not include a focus on DEI, and that they will no longer be a part of the Human Rights Campaign, amid other decisions rooted in the same, came as a shock. First, why share it at all? Were they under so much pressure from a group of investors that the dollars they stand to lose from them is greater than the dollars they would make by embracing a diverse customer base? At least now customers can themselves decide. Second, now they have shared it... Now what? How does that change the ways in which the colleagues within the organization feel - their sense of belonging and inclusion, their protections when it comes to microaggressions and other acts of hate, their everyday lived experiences. Knowing that your company has lifted the foot off the accelerator of DEI is essentially putting the brakes on progress. And third, why continue with a statement of 'United we Stand' when clearly, united within a homogenous group is not united at all? Harley-Davidson recently posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, "We remain committed to listening to all members of our community as we continue on our journey together as one Harley-Davidson. United We Ride". Harley-Davidson, if you really want to make a statement, add your point of view on the first page of your website, on your T-shirts, on your billboards, so your customers can make a decision whether they want to keep browsing. https://lnkd.in/ecMSdbPH
