"WYDOT engineers, surveyors and geologists mobilized quickly to try to maintain highway viability as long as possible, but catastrophic failure could not be avoided." Thankfully, nobody was injured in the slide because WYDOT closed the road after a crack developed on Thursday. Although State DOTs have a duty to maintain highways in a condition reasonably safe for travel, they are not required to ensure absolute safety. However, notice of a dangerous condition can give rise to an obligation to close the road, as WYDOT did here.
