This week, Consumer Counsel Coleman and Sen. Blumenthal decried President Trump’s proposed tariffs on Canadian electricity that will have a direct impact on household budgets and increase electricity costs for Connecticut consumers. A portion of Connecticut’s electricity is sourced from Eastern Canadian hydropower, a cheaper alternative to higher priced natural gas. These unprecedented tariffs will only increase the burden on families and businesses struggling to keep up with electricity bills. Catch up on recent events below: ? ?? February 1st?– President Trump signed an Executive Order announcing tariffs on a range of Canadian products, including a tariff on imported energy products such as oil and gas (10%) and electricity (10-25%). ?? February 28th?– ISO-NE and NYISO, grid operators that rely on intrastate and cross border power flow with Canada for system reliability and affordability, filed an emergency tariff revision with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to delay the March 4th?implementation of the tariffs and seeking approval to modify existing procedures, without which, our grid operators would not be able to collect the tariffs and face insolvency. ?? March 6th?– President Trump’s State of the Union Address signaled that the proposed tariffs on Canadian imports would be delayed until April 2nd. ?? March 10th?– Ontario Premier Doug Ford imposed a 25% tariff on U.S. electricity exports and Quebec Premier Francois Legault announced Quebec Province may cease sales of electricity to U.S. spot markets. ? While the impacts of these unprecedented proposals are unclear, we know for certain that these ill-conceived proposals will only raise costs for consumers.
