Every child should be an inventor once, better twice.

关于我们

The Connecticut Invention Convention (CIC) is an award winning, internationally recognized, 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational program designed to develop and enhance critical thinking skills in children in grades K-12 through invention, innovation and entrepreneurship, while encouraging their interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The CIC is the nation’s oldest continuously operating children’s invention education program. Since the 1983-1984 school year, an estimated 300,000 Connecticut students have experienced local CIC invention programs. Annually, more than 17,000 students in grades K-12, from over 275 Connecticut schools, take part in the CIC learning curriculum. Annually, more than 17,000 students in grades K-12, from over 275 Connecticut schools, take part in the CIC learning curriculum and up to 2,400 of them advance to compete in Regional, State, National, and Global Invention Conventions annually. The CIC is funded by sponsorships, grants, and in-kind support from corporations, foundations, and individuals, and academic institutions. Since 2008, the CIC has been on an aggressive expansion plan, growing school participation by more than 200%, expanding its partnership with the University of Connecticut School of Engineering, and adding many new corporate supporters. • Earlier this week, our community-based organization, the EverWonder Children's Museum completed their Invention Convention program with their competition! CIC's Doron Feller attended to judge at the event. The EverWonder team shared with us that innovators' parents saw immense growth, curiosity, and an eagerness to problem-solve over the two-month program! Two young innovators will be joining us at the 2025 Connecticut Invention Convention State Finals this May! Congratulations to the winners and to all the innovators from the the EverWonder Children's Museum! 🎉 We look forward to working with EverWonder Children's Museum in the future and can't wait to see what their young innovators continue to create! 🚀

  • Last week, our supporters Troutman Pepper Locke LLP hosted an intellectual property event for our CIC Independent Inventors and our CT innovators headed for Invention Convention U.S. Nationals 2025! This group of students are starting the provisional patent application process with IP guidance from Troutman Pepper Locke LLP, and support from their parents and the CIC team! Thank you to the Troutman Pepper Locke LLP team for hosting, educating, and guiding our young innovators! The IP education you are providing is incredibly vital to allow these innovators to protect and own their ideas.

    • FAQ: Why Are We Starting NextMinds?
Since 1983, the Connecticut Invention Convention has been one of the longest-running and largest youth innovation education programs in the world. After 40 years of serving Connecticut’s students and educators, we expanded north into Massachusetts to make our programming accessible to even more future innovators. We’ve also expanded our programmatic offerings and impact, including programming for new audiences outside the K-12 classroom, including at-home learners, community-based organizations, and college-age students. During our 2023-2024 year, alone, we served 12,000 young innovators!

As we reflect on all of these new developments, it’s time for us to recognize our growth and set our sights on what’s NEXT for us. Introducing … NextMinds!
    • FAQ: What is NextMinds?

  • Last week Connecticut Invention Convention team (including Kerry Macfarland, Nichole Pitruzzello, and Christine Lawlor-King) hosted an amazing professional development session at the Trinity College-Hartford Innovation Hub! We were joined by educators from all over the state, including returning CIC educators and educators new to the world of innovation education! During the session, we utilized one of the USPTO trading card lesson plans. These lesson plans use real-world patent holders featured on the USPTO's inventor trading cards to inspire a lesson on inventing and innovation. For our PD, we used Dr. Rory Cooper, an engineer who uses his experience living with a disability to invent assistive technologies for other disabled folks. The USPTO's Dr. Rory Cooper lesson plan challenges people to invent an assistive device to help people with disabilities to use an eating utensil. Check out the photos to see the educators testing their devices! The educators walked away with activities to introduce their students to invention and innovation, knowledge about the CIC program year ahead, and USPTO trading cards to inspire their students with real-world inventors! Thank you to all the educators who joined us and thank you to the Trinity College-Hartford Innovation Hub for hosting us!

  • The Connecticut & Massachusetts Invention Convention's Nick Briere and Doron Feller, recently served as panelists on the "STEM Innovators: Early Entrepreneurship Education Shaping the Future" virtual panel hosted by The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Government-University-Industry-Philanthropy Research Roundtable (GUIPRR)! Nick and Doron were joined by fellow panelist Jorge Valdes, of the USPTO. During the webinar, the panelists highlighted the value of equipping K-12 students with entrepreneurial skills and emphasize how entrepreneurship education strengthens communities and the broader STEM enterprise. Thank you to GUIPRR for providing our team with this wonderful opportunity to share what we've learned about bringing entrepreneurship education to K-12 students!
