Staff from the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) donated approximately 40 frozen turkeys and dozens of nonperishable food items as part of the first annual Joe Steckel Turkey Drive to benefit Connecticut Foodshare. Steckel was a member of the DPH building maintenance team for 25 years and coordinated an annual Thanksgiving food drive from 2000 – 2018. It was a pleasure to kick off the Connecticut Environmental Health Association 70th anniversary meeting with outgoing president Anton Trojanowski. From getting lead paint out of homes, to ensuring safe septic systems, to educating families about the harms of radon, to ensuring food in our restaurants is safe for consumers, and to helping Connecticut residents understand what PFAS is, our environmental health professionals help people stay healthy in our communities every day. The Connecticut Department of Public Health helps advance this mission by being partners in this work and providing technical assistance. Congratulations on 70 years!

I really enjoyed presenting at the CT Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities agency wide retreat today on Environmental Justice and Public Health. We had an opportunity to discuss health equity, address social and structural determinants of health, and explore how the Connecticut Department of Public Health is addressing environmental justice issues like lead in homes/pipes/daycares/schools. The origins of the EJ movement harken back to the Memphis Sanitation Strike in 1968 when Black workers advocated for fair pay and better working conditions. Environmental hazards to air, water, and soil are inherently public health issues. Thanks to Lawrence Samuel Young and Devin Brown for their assistance with my presentation.

I am so honored to announce that I have been elected President Elect of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials by my fellow state and territorial health officials. I’ve enjoyed working with Immediate Past President Dr. Steven J. Stack, MD, MBA for the past year in my role as Secretary/Treasurer. I look forward to working with President Dr. Scott Harris, Alabama State Health Officer, ASTHO CEO Dr. Joseph Kanter, MD, MPH, the entire board and ASTHO staff. I have learned so much from fellow health officials and the Connecticut Department of Public Health has benefited from so many ASTHO programs including leadership development, technical assistance, and legislative advocacy.
