In celebration of Black History Month, we are reflecting on the national theme for 2025, “African Americans and the Labor Movement,” exploring the profound contributions of Black Americans to the workforce—across every industry and era of history. From laborers and innovators to leaders and changemakers, their work has shaped the foundation of American life. As part of this conversation, we asked our colleagues to share a Black historical or cultural figure who has inspired their careers. Their stories highlight the enduring impact of Black excellence in the workplace and beyond. Stay tuned as we celebrate these voices and honor the legacy of those who paved the way. Our VP of Strategic Sourcing & Procurement Tynina Lucas, kicks off the conversation by sharing the many inspirational forces in her career: When asked to reflect on a Black historical or cultural figure who has significantly influenced my career, I can’t pinpoint just one individual. The truth is, the impact of historical and present-day leaders, like Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Shirley Chisholm, Jane Bolin, Madam C.J. Walker, Maggie Lena Walker, Thurgood Marshall, Colin Powell, Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, Kamala Harris, and so many others, has shaped the possibilities for all of us. Without their courage, vision, and determination, many of us might not have had the aspiration or influence to pursue leadership roles in business or other fields. Rather than honoring just one individual, I feel it’s important to acknowledge the collective legacy of these African American leaders, both past and present, who paved the way for us. Their efforts lit a path forward, allowing us to dream, aspire, and achieve what we might not have otherwise.

Today, on Women Physicians Day, we honor the brilliant women doctors who care for our members year-round — and trailblazers who paved the way, like Dr. Patricia Era Bath. Born in Harlem to immigrant parents, Dr. Bath shattered barriers: - First African American woman to serve as a surgical staff member at UCLA. - First woman to lead an ophthalmology postgraduate training program. - First African American woman to hold a medical patent (she holds FIVE!). Dr. Bath’s groundbreaking invention, the laserphaco probe, restores sight to countless people worldwide. She also founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, declaring, “eyesight is a human right.” To all the women physicians making history and saving lives every day — we see you, and we celebrate you. #WomenPhysiciansDay

Colleagues across our enterprise recently joined forces to make a difference for children in our community this holiday season. The team sorted over 3,000 toys that will be donated to 33 community partner organizations for distribution to families in our area. Thank you to our dedicated team and community partners for helping make the season brighter for those we serve.

It is an honor to support the partnership’s mission and to stand united in our commitment to safeguarding the well-being of Connecticut’s youth.

?? Warning for Connecticut Residents: Beware of “Self-Funded” Health Plans Connecticut Insurance Commissioner Andrew N. Mais is warning residents about risky “self-funded” health plans being marketed to individuals. These plans, which claim to make you a “limited partner” in an employer group, are NOT ACA-compliant and lack essential consumer protections. ?? What you need to know: ? Limited Coverage: These plans often don’t cover a full range of medical services like preventive care, doctor visits, and emergency care. ? High Medical Bills: Without comprehensive coverage, you may face large, unpaid medical bills. ? No State Protection: These plans fall outside the Connecticut Department of Insurance’s oversight, meaning you won’t have the usual consumer protections if something goes wrong. Several groups are offering these plans in Connecticut. Be cautious before signing up or paying premiums. Check your plan documents or insurance card to see if you’re enrolled in one of these high-risk plans. Anyone with questions can contact the Connecticut Insurance Department by email at [email protected] or by calling 860-297-3900. #CThealth #healthplans More details and resources at the link. https://bit.ly/4g5ofqU
