It was a delicious pleasure to represent Nkenge's Gallery and enjoy the food creations at the black-tie fundraiser, “Flavors of Africa & Diaspora: Best Chefs Wisconsin.” Milwaukee executive Yollande Tchouapi brought together 40 of the best chefs in the area for a culinary competition featuring African dishes. The Nov. 10 event at the Milwaukee Athletic Club was presented by Ubuntu MKE, which Yollande leads. It is the first Wisconsin-based cross-cultural incubator lab designed to build a more inclusive, diverse, and equitable food community. For me, it was also a night to celebrate my own African ancestry. I was excited to meet a native of Mali who complimented the fabric of my skirt from Mali. I have family roots in Mali going back generations and I wore it to honor my ancestors. Did you know? My business, Nkenge's Gallery, featured art pieces from Mali, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo and more nations in two recent exhibits. ?? Happy Halloween! My brother Ed Jenkins III and I were lucky to have our dad, Ed Jenkins Jr, make our Halloween costumes when we were kids. It was fun dreaming up new costumes each year. Unfortunately, since we grew up in Wisconsin, most of our costumes were covered by a heavy coat! My dad gave us an example of creativity and self-expression that we are still reflecting on as I launch Nkenge's Gallery African art exhibits, and my brother creates youth podcasts and engaging youth events as a youth pastor. Fresh off our successful debut art exhibit, Nkenge's Gallery is kicking off our second Milwaukee exhibit this Friday, Nov. 1. On Friday and Saturday, we’ll fill a ballroom at the Sheraton Brookfield with a distinctive art experience at “The Retreat,” fueled by Sherman Phoenix Marketplace. The retreat’s immersive experience is designed to empower, educate, and promote wellness within the regional BIPOC community. This week included two meaningful fundraisers! As a Board Member of Bublr Bikes, I’m proud that the major annual fundraiser – The Bublr Bash – benefits Milwaukee’s transportation options and environment. Tuesday night, we were at Wheel & Sprocket in Bay View. Bublr Bash proceeds will support our local bike-share system while providing community programming like the B3 Workforce Development Program, Savvy Cycling Classes, free Access Passes to income-qualified residents of Milwaukee County, and adaptive bikes. BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS Salute to the African American Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin and its primary fundraiser, the Breakfast of Champions! On Wednesday, the Breakfast at Fiserv Forum honored business leaders who boost economic development and wealth creation in the African American community. Cheers to Derek Mosley, JD, the 2024 Business Champion! Michael Emem was named the Young Pioneer, and Rochelle Einsiedel won Rising Star! The fundraising event benefits Black entrepreneurs across Wisconsin, providing access to capital, education, and advocacy.
