"Farmer groups with a stronger gender balance in leadership are better equipped to develop their value chains and ensure that both men and women work together to foster peace within their households and sustain their livelihoods," writes Leland Fellow Chika Kondo, placed with Oxfam in Uganda . In many developing countries, women produce up to 80 percent of the food through farm work, while also being responsible for taking care of the household and children. Despite this, traditional gender roles in these societies mean women often have limited access to land, information, capital, and credit. That's where GALS comes in: a methodology that brings men and women of a household together to plan their livelihoods and address all of their needs. Chika observed GALS training in action in Uganda and reports on its transformative potential in a recent blog post for the Hunger Center. https://buff.ly/48Q6TvK
关于我们
The Congressional Hunger Center is on a mission to develop, inspire, and connect leaders, and advocate public policies that create a food secure world. We envision a world without hunger and poverty where every person can achieve their full potential because equitable systems exist to achieve financial freedom and full access to healthful, affordable, and culturally appropriate foods. Our program work consists of: 1) Leadership Development – We provide leadership development opportunities for hunger fighters to connect policy with practice, learn together in peer cohorts, apply an equity lens to their work, and make meaningful contributions to the fight against hunger in the U.S. and overseas. Our flagship programs include the Bill Emerson National Hunger Fellows Program and Mickey Leland International Hunger Fellows Program. 2) Network Building – We facilitate collaboration across our network of 550 fellowship alumni and 300+ partner organizations and work at the intersection of hunger and its root causes. We break down silos and engage a broad range of allies who have a vested interest in ending hunger. 3) Advocacy – We are a one-stop shop for policymakers in need of accurate, field-based information, and expertise on hunger and its root causes. Woven into all the work we do is a commitment to equity and ensuring that people who have experienced hunger and poverty are active leaders in designing, implementing, and evaluating community solutions and public policies. We also believe that leaders at the field and policy levels must collaborate and share knowledge in order to effect the systemic changes required to end hunger and poverty.

Building awareness of hunger in the U.S. includes understanding the most effective programs we have for ending hunger...as well as how those programs sometimes fall short, and how to address their limitations. Robert Campbell is VP of Policy at Feeding America, where he has had a front row seat in the evolution of USDA's Summer Food Service Program over many years. Most recently he has been involved in the passage and rollout of SUNBucks, USDA's new permanent summer EBT program. He's also a #HungerFellow alum,?and can trace his work on summer meals to his placement with Florida Impact in Tallahassee. We spoke with Robert recently about his work to keep kids fed in through summer time and beyond. "When we listen to people," says Robert, "when we hear them, when we let that sink in, when we use that to challenge the status quo, that’s when we can find transformative solutions." #hhweek #endhunger #endhungernow https://lnkd.in/eE3976Pk

Longtime board member Katharine Emerson of World Food Program USA has been named as Chairwoman of the Board. “I take on this new role with determination to pay forward the legacy of my parents, who devoted their careers to public service and solving hunger, and to help nurture the next generation of leaders to solve one of our most critical global challenges,” said Emerson. “I’m honored to follow my longtime friend and mentor, Rep. Jim McGovern, and thrilled to welcome Claire Casey to the board.” Claire Casey serves as president of AARP Foundation, where she guides the strategic direction of the nation’s leading organization committed to reducing poverty for older adults. “Millions of older Americans are food insecure,” said Casey. “I am honored to contribute to this organization’s mission to develop a new generation of leaders in the movement to end hunger for everyone.” The Hunger Center also welcomes five new members to its Alum Council, including: ? Thank you to the Governing Board members, Advisory Board members and staff from the Atlanta Community Food Bank for participating in our #EndHungerin30 Challenge throughout October. We've been delighted to hear that the Government Affairs director is going to use the policy primer to help brief people on social safety net programs and that the Education Director has used articles from the challenge in an event recently. What a great partnership with a robust organization! Huge thanks to one of our Hunger Center alums, Xavier Roberts, MPP, for helping us get connected. If your organization would like to participate as a group, reach out to Liz Pearce or any of our staff to get started. Custom courses are available, and all courses include a certificate of completion. #endhungerin30 #zerohungeracademy #onlinelearning #volunteer
