Military Veteran Startup Conference 2025 (MVS25) Speaker Spotlight: Emery Wager (United States Marine Corps), Co-Founder & CEO at Confido Legal. Emery's journey from Marine Corps infantry officer to fintech entrepreneur exemplifies his commitment to service and innovation. He advises founders: "Try to decouple your success from time as much as possible. What matters most is the direction and the goal." His journey is marked by: ?? Marine Corps Infantry officer, completing two combat tours in Afghanistan - one as a platoon commander and another as a company executive officer. ?? Prior to his military service, he earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, breaking from the traditional career path to follow his calling to serve. ?? Post-military, Emery spent 10 years in operations and business development, managing outside counsel relationships, leading him to legal tech opportunities. In 2023, he founded Confido Legal to revolutionize payments and financial services in the legal industry. Emery's core advice for leaders: ?? Take ownership: Don't just help - take responsibility and ensure the job gets done. ?? Focus on friction points: Leaders should identify and personally engage with the most significant challenges. ?? Think systematically: Create integrated solutions that solve real industry problems. ?? Maintain direction: Success isn't about timeline but maintaining the right course toward your goal. ?? Drive accessibility: Work to make systems (like legal services) more accessible to a broader population.

Most people outside the legal sector don’t know about the IOLTa program but are surprised/fascinated when I tell them about it. IOLTa in one sentence: Interest on client money held by law firms for a short period of time is pooled at the state level and goes towards funding legal aid in that state. The program is not without controversy and has weathered legal challenges in the past. But it’s hard to deny the good work being done at the tip of the spear. This week Stephanie W. and I got to hear firsthand how the Legal Foundation of Washington is putting IOLTa funds to use. I am proud of the fact that this coming year Confido Legal will deposit hundreds of millions of dollars into IOLTa accounts on behalf of law firms across North America, with that money likely generating hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding for legal aid in this interest rate environment.

In our latest episode, we dive into the world of litigation finance with Evan Meyerson from Burford Capital. ?? Evan explains how litigation funding provides capital for legal claims, allowing law firms and clients to pursue justice without shouldering all the financial risk. The core concept is that investments in legal claims are repaid only if the case succeeds. If the case is unsuccessful, there’s no repayment. If it succeeds, the investor shares in the outcome based on the capital provided.
