Congratulations to Alisha Tolani MD for her presentation at PCRS2024 this morning. Based on her experience caring for fertility patients at University of California, San Francisco and San Francisco General Hospital, Dr. Tolani and her colleagues from UCSF, UCLA, Shady Grove, and Posterity Health (Stacey Kenfield André Belarmino, Joshua Halpern, Jerrine Morris, Yanette Anaya, and I) asked the question, “could a mail-in semen analysis system break down barriers in access to this fundamental component of male fertility testing?”??We have observed in our reproductive urology and REI fertility practices that people of color and those with less household resources struggled to get a semen analysis and were slower overall to do this. We analyzed data from Fellow on over 11,000 men obtaining a semen analysis to see if using this at home, mail-in system would break down race, education, and income barriers to completing semen analysis testing. Her analysis identified no clinically significant differences in completion rates: all completion rates were high across groups. Significantly, this is the first study to look prospectively across a very large, nation-wide cohort to explore socioeconomic barriers in access to male fertility testing and to identify that the Fellow system appears to mitigate these barriers. #accesstocare #maleinfertility #malefertility
