Recent executive actions have raised the potential for significant budget cuts and mass layoffs at the National Science Foundation (NSF), jeopardizing U.S. leadership in AI, cybersecurity, quantum computing, and more. NSF funds nearly 80% of fundamental computing research at U.S. institutions — fueling innovation, economic growth, and national security. Cutting NSF would slow breakthroughs, weaken national defense, and shrink the supply of skilled workers in critical industries — just as global competitors ramp up their investments. ?? Returning to academia as an industry professional can be challenging. The NSF CSGrad4US program is designed to support individuals returning to graduate school for a PhD in computing after working in industry. For two years, the Center for Evaluating the Research Pipeline (CERP) has been evaluating the program’s impact. Highlights from this evaluation effort include: ??
