The BSI project is making a real difference by giving young people access to digital technologies, especially laptops, to enhance their studies, job prospects, and businesses. ???? Computer Aid has selected 7 locations across South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and Tanzania to supply the much-needed equipment. Many of these locations feature Solar Community Hubs (SCHs), which are solar-powered, self-sufficient computer labs in converted shipping containers, offering digital literacy training and essential services like printing, charging, internet connectivity, device repairs, and recycling. ???? Bridging the Digital Divide in Vocational Training Centers! Digital Schools is back for another year—this time with a new approach! In the past, we have focused on supporting high schools, but this year, we are shifting our efforts to Vocational Training Centers (VTCs), which are part of the devolved county government system. Our 2025 focus is on Nandi County, which is championing the National Government's agenda to establish digital hubs across the country to bridge the digital divide. To support this vision, Computer Aid International, in partnership with Dell Technologies, has launched a pilot project equipping three VTCs in Nandi with: ? 25 PCs per center ? A projector ? A printer The Governor of Nandi and county officials have shown strong support by signing an MoU, committing to expanding technology access to more VTCs. What’s Next? ?? A Training of Trainers (ToT) program to equip VTC instructors with essential digital skills. ?? By August 2025, we anticipate certifying 600 community members with the International Certification for Digital Literacy (ICDL). The Rwanda Digital Schools project has made great strides in improving ICT skills across 8 secondary schools in Kigali. ?? In Phase 1, computer labs were set up and teachers were trained in ICDL modules. Phase 2 focused on further teacher training and expanding student access to the labs. In the final phase, the project tested 830 students in 'Computer & Online Essentials', equipping them with core ICT skills and internationally recognised certification to boost their educational and career opportunities. In November 2024, Computer Aid along with BSI UK and BSI South Africa have donated 35 laptops to our local partner, the Small Projects Foundation. Five of these laptops were donated in January to visually impaired young people as part of the Bona Ubuntu Programme. This is a programme developed by SPF in Eastern Cape to help address vision problems among young people, ensuring that poor eyesight doesn’t prevent students from achieving their educational goals.
