From a PR perspective, this story is *chef’s kiss*! I can’t even pinpoint the best part of this: The killer headline in WIRED, the fact that they hacked Apple or the feel-good grandma aspect. The story was told perfectly. If you’re trying to get some press attention for your company, consider this: This story is all about technology that was created to solve a problem. It isn’t focused on the CEO or the launch of a new product. It isn’t self-serving, and it certainly doesn’t lead with “this research group is the best!” But the message is received all the same, and presented better than any company could hope for. Mattel printed the URL to a pornographic website rather than it's landing page for the movie "Wicked" on product packaging. While certainly a significant error, so far, Mattel is handling the issue well from what we've seen. Our crisis formula: Ownership, Empathy and Repair. Ownership and Empathy: “We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this. Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children,” a company statement read. Repair: Mattel has advised parents that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children. Consumers who already have the product are advised to discard the product packaging or obscure the link and may contact Mattel Customer Service for further information.
