The City of Avondale Estates Curbside Composting Pilot Program is off to a strong start! The 420+ residents participating in this free, USDA-funded program have diverted 10,942 pounds of food scraps in the first six weeks! The compost created through this program will be returned to Food Well Alliance and Roots Down who will distribute it to BIPOC growers in DeKalb County and support edible landscapes and local library gardens. Without supporting infrastructure and resources, food waste bans are more likely to fail. A great article by Fast Company on the key factors in the success of Massachusetts' food waste ban. "Other states could follow Massachusetts’s lead and get food waste producers to comply with bans, he adds—if they’re willing to invest the resources to build up their composting network and enforcement protocols. “You hear a lot of ‘more versus less’ regulation, and that’s not what it comes down to,” he says. “It comes down to better-supported versus not-supported regulation.” Read the full article here:?https://lnkd.in/g3htSJGv

Developing strong partnerships with organizations like Food Well Alliance has played a critical role in the success of our community and grant-funded efforts in Georgia. As a nonprofit, they support a network of local urban farmers and,?alongside the Atlanta Regional Commission, created the City Agriculture Plan, which has influenced several cities to consider or implement plans that support local food systems and their necessary components, such as composting. Food Well Alliance has helped our team facilitate the return of finished compost to local growers, with over 1.5 million pounds of compost distributed across 40 local growers in the past two years. Their commitment to growing #composting infrastructure and programming, along with their dedication to providing resources to growers in Metro Atlanta, has significantly contributed to the success of CompostNow's mission to reduce food waste and rebuild soil health. Composting in isolation is not a comprehensive solution. Building relationships with groups like Food Well Alliance helps us ensure that this vital soil amendment reaches the hands of local growers, fostering a broader ecosystem-level change that is truly #impactful. When she’s not at CompostNow, Bobbie loves spending time outdoors with friends and family, and is one of our resident long-distance runners (yes, she’s completed a marathon)!
