Food Waste Recycling for Northern Colorado

关于我们

Compost Queen is an award winning food waste composter in Fort Collins, Colorado. Founded in 2018, Compost Queen has grown to server residents and businesses in Larimer County with local composting solutions. Compost Queen operates a network of decentralized farms that recycle local food waste into high quality soil amendments. This concept, known as MUCCs (Microsite Urban Community Composting) won an Emerging Composter Challenge Award at the USCC Compost 2022 convention. We have since scaled up our operation with the assistance of a Front Range Waste Diversion Grant, and recently won the Small Compost Manufacturer of the Year award at the USCC Compost 2023 convention. Our mission as a Public Benefit Corporation is to make a lasting impact on the local environment by stopping greenhouse gas pollution and rebuilding local soils.

  • Today we micro dosed. We're hard at work testing our process with compostable packaging from Eco-Products and World Centric in our Sustainable Generation? system. We completed a CFTP bag test in the fall last year as part of the Compost Research & Education Foundation (CREF) program and got some promising results. Unfortunately, the onion bags we loaded up with products and tossed in the pile didn't seem to get the same air or moisture as the rest of the contents in our pile. A dose test allows us to basically go for it - tipping in about 1.5 yards of compostable packaging like PLA and Fiber Board. We added in 290.8 gallons of water during mixing, tossed on the GORE cover and planted our temperature probe. We'll let this pile sit on air for 2 weeks before we flip it to the next lane. 6 weeks to process and 4 weeks to cure - basically three months before we screen and get results. The number of facilities accepting these compostable packages is quickly dwindling in Colorado due to contamination rates that come with them. Step 1 is making sure they process in our system with our best practices.

  • We're excited to be working with University of Northern Colorado to divert over 1,000 pounds of food waste in the first month of their program. The Holmes Dining Hall is diverting meat, dairy, bones, fruits and vegetables from the landfill to make renewable resources - completing the carbon cycle. • We found Compost Royalty at the USCC conference in Phoenix today! What's that mean? Hannah was a team member with us while she completed her undergraduate degree at CSU, and she caught the compost bug! Now she's attending the international conference, coordinating the Young Professionals Volunteer Day, pursuing a Master's (Go Rams!), and winning awards and funding for her passionate pursuit of sustainability. Keep kicking ass, Hannah!
