The oil and gas industry is facing a critical frontline workforce challenge as it continues to struggle with attracting and retaining younger workers. A recent report from ECITB highlights that over 18% of the current workforce holding roles in frontline operations is over the age of 60, while only 12% are aged 18-29. With the reality of an aging workforce that is leaving at an ever accelerating rate since 2020, the oil and gas sector risks losing its tenured, skilled talent to retirement without sufficient replacement by the next generation. The latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows a 3.7% decline in workplace fatalities in 2023... which is an encouraging step forward in protecting frontline workers. However, there are key insights from the report reveal areas that still need attention, such as the reality that jobsite transportation and falls-related incidents remain the most frequent causes of fatalities, accounting for over 36.8% of all occupational deaths, as well as serious injuries across the US in recent years. While the decline in fatality rates is most certainly a step in the right direction, there is still quite a lot of absolutely crucial work needed to be done, in order to ensure every worker returns home safely.
