Older adults are at the greatest risk for falls with many of these falls leading to traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Even a mild TBI (concussion), can have significant consequences on an older brain leading to changes in cognition and behavior. Additionally, TBIs that occur in older adults can be a contributing risk for dementia. Here are some simple tips from Dr. Ashman's presentation at the E4 Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Disparities in Aging to clinicians working with older adults: "Helping your clients engage in age-appropriate exercise, manage their medications, getting their vision checked, and making their living environment clutter-free are important ways to prevent falls."

Whose responsibility is it to bring evidence-based cognitive rehabilitation interventions into clinical care to optimize the benefits of the clients we serve? Is it the researchers? The clinicians? Organizational leaders? Policy makers? Thoughtful discussions followed my presentation at #NRSIG2024 on the implementation of our STEP intervention. In my opinion, successful implementation is like a Greek dance: we must all hold hands, move in sync and in the same direction, and close the gap between clinical research and practice.

As the population ages, the incidence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) among older adults is rising, presenting unique challenges and considerations for healthcare professionals. In her upcoming presentation for the Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Disparities in Aging, Compendium Network co-founder Dr. Teresa Ashman will delve into the intersection of aging and TBI, whether aging with a TBI or sustaining a TBI in older age. She will present the latest research on TBI in older adults, including risk factors, recovery trajectories, and long-term outcomes. She will also highlight innovative approaches to prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation tailored to the aging population. Discover how to improve care strategies for this vulnerable and growing demographic. https://lnkd.in/eJfRWyWC #compendiumnetwork #TBI #braininjury #aging

People with brain injury can benefit significantly from interventions targeting emotion regulation. Below is a graph from one of our studies, showing that after participating in our EmReg intervention, there was a significant reduction in problems with emotion regulation. Twelve weeks after they completed EmReg, our participants continued to improve. Teaching patients strategies that they can use on their own is crucial. #emotionregulation #braininjury #cognitiverehabilitation #compendiumnetworkllc
