Recently, the third-party certification Global Animal Partnership (G.A.P.) introduced new standards requiring participants to shift to higher-welfare breeds for chickens raised for meat, addressing the health issues of fast-growing breeds. Compassion in World Farming U.S. (CIWF US) has just released the latest EggTrack report, and U.S. Companies lead in cage-free egg transition, but Canada has fallen behind. ?? 40% of U.S. hens are now in cage-free systems, compared to only 18% in Canada. ?? Major companies like Aramark, Dairy Queen, and Target are stepping up to meet their 2025 cage-free commitments. ?? We highlight some producers leading the way, like Kipster U.S. and Handsome Brook Farms ?? 39 states now offer cage-free eggs through WIC, improving access for millions of families. “America’s transition to cage-free egg systems is a win for both animals and consumers,” says Julia Johnson, U.S. Head of Food Business at CIWF. "Put simply, the inadequate solutions put forth by Big Ag cannot outpace industrialized farming's negative impacts on the planet. While seaweed and methane vaccines may address cow burps, they don't address carbon emissions from deforestation or manure emissions of nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas over 270 times more powerful than CO2. They also don't address the nitrate water pollution from manure, which can sicken people and cause massive fish kills and harmful algal blooms; biodiversity decline from habitat loss, which has dropped 73% since the rise of industrialized animal agriculture; freshwater use, drying up rivers and accounting for over a quarter of humanity's water footprint; or pesticide use on corn and soy feed, which kills soil microorganisms that are vital to life on Earth."
