ASCs and the rise of the machines — are we ready? ?? ‘Not always,’ warned Vice President of Facility Development Deb Yoder, RN, MHA, CNOR, CASC, who joined an panel of ambulatory surgery center experts at Ambulatory Surgery Center News’ recent conference. Upside: Surgeries that once required large, open incisions in inpatient settings can now be accomplished with just four or five small incisions in outpatient settings, Deb explained in an interview with Shelby Grebbin.? Caveat: Surgical robots are expensive. For an ortho robot, for example “you’re looking at $600,000 to $1 million,” Deb observed. Before you invest, run vigorous analytics to ensure that your ASC has the volume and insurance contracts necessary to yield ROI. If you're a health system leader looking to expand your footprint, it's not just about capturing inpatient volume—it's about strategically positioning for the faster-growing outpatient service lines.?Despite a growing, aging population nationwide, overall inpatient volumes will increase only 3% over the next 10 years, Sg2 forecasts. During the same period, hospital outpatient volume will grow 17% to 5.82 billion, while ambulatory surgery center volume will go up 21% to 44 million, Sg2 predicts. ?
