An incredible evening at the CFA Society Minnesota Annual Dinner! Our Compass Capital Management team had the privilege of attending this year’s event, where legendary investor Howard Marks, co-chairman and co-founder of Oaktree Capital Management, L.P., delivered a keynote that left us all reflecting on the fundamentals of investing. Marks reminded us that “It’s not what you buy, but what you pay,” emphasizing that investment success isn’t just about picking the right assets - it’s about acquiring them at the right price. His insights on market cycles, risk, and valuation were a timely reminder of the importance of discipline and historical awareness. Marks revisited his Sea Change memos, highlighting how decades of declining interest rates shaped investor behavior - making capital cheap, pushing valuations higher, and driving investors further out on the risk curve. With today’s higher rates, the investment landscape has shifted, requiring a more thoughtful and selective approach. He also touched on lessons from financial history, warning that the worst loans are often made in the best of times - something many investors overlooked before 2022. A few key takeaways that stood out: 📌 Investment Cycles & Psychology Matter – History repeats, and recognizing patterns is critical. Marks referenced speculative extremes like the 2000 tech bubble and the South Sea Bubble to illustrate how optimism can lead to excessive risk-taking. 📌 Volatility ≠ Risk – While many rely on metrics like the Sharpe ratio, Marks argued that true risk isn’t about short-term market fluctuations but about permanent loss of capital. As Warren Buffett has said, "I’d rather earn a lumpy 15% return than a smooth 12%." 📌 Private Credit & Market Insights – Marks noted that private credit has only existed in favorable conditions and has yet to be tested in a downturn. While it appears less volatile due to mark-to-market differences, liquidity concerns remain. He also expressed skepticism about buying high-growth stocks at current valuations, favoring value stocks, non-S&P 500 names, and select emerging markets. A huge thank you to our own Jennifer Oseth for doing a fantastic job announcing the guest speaker! The Compass team truly enjoyed the discussion - Marks’ emphasis on owning stocks for the long run and truly understanding what you own aligns closely with our own investment philosophy. Shoutout to Justin Cox for capturing some amazing shots from the evening! 📸 #CFAAnnualDinner #HowardMarks #LongTermInvesting #Investments #Finance
