#TBT On March 20, 1922, America’s first aircraft carrier, USS Langley (CV-1), was commissioned at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Norfolk, Va. The Langley was named in honor of Samuel Pierpont Langley, an American astronomer, physicist, aircraft engineer and math professor at the U.S. Naval Academy. She was converted from USS Jupiter (Collier #3) and carried the Vought VE-7 biplane, Aeromarine 39B seaplane and, later, the Curtiss P-40 "Warhawk" fighter-bomber, with the first Navy carrier takeoff being a Vought VE-7. Today, the U.S. Navy has 11 aircraft carriers, all of which are Nimitz or Gerald R. Ford class, holding up to 90 aircraft of different types. #TBT On March 13th, 1956, Attack Squadron (VA) 83 “Rampagers” became the first missile-equipped squadron to deploy onboard an aircraft carrier. The Rampagers, flying F7U-3M Cutlass aircraft capable of launching Sparrow I air-to-air missiles, deployed with USS Intrepid (CVA-11). VA-83 was redesignated Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 83 March 1, 1988 when they received the F/A-18C “Hornet” aircraft. VFA-83 kept the original insignia of VA-83. Today, they fly the F/A-18E “Super Hornet” and operate out of Naval Air Station Oceana. ?? : Photographer's Mate 1st Class, Wilcox Naval History and Heritage Command U.S. Fleet Forces Command #NavalHistory #NavalAviation #USSIntrepid #Rampagers #NavalHeritage #VFA83Rampagers
