Community Shop Class is a place to learn and create, teach and build. Our new project is designed to expand access to trades work and to celebrate those who create and build things that help our community. The purpose is to be a good neighbor in every way possible. We have an incredible shop filled with tools and inspiration. We are currently developing summer and after-school programs designed to give Oak Park students a place to learn the basics of carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work while also learning about sustainability, safety, and conservation. Our life-focused curriculum will be reinforced with positive coaching, accountability, and sensitivity. Our efforts will be seen in our neighborhood as we will use the skills we learn to help Oak Park residents, non-profits, and micro businesses.

I’ve been so patient in announcing this- ITS OFFICIAL; Community Shop Class has been awarded the SMUD Shine Award for 2024 to build out our tiny home program and to bring tools and development to our Oak Park Community. Thank you Chad Orcutt for sitting with me the day we got this opportunity and making sure I had everything I needed to get this together- Thank you to our leadership for providing guidance Josh Manley Maximilian Rosa Michael Bell - Thank you to Betty M. Low, MSW and the SMUD team for seeing the magic and potential we hold at Shop Class- This was my first grant application; I have applied for a lot of things, done a million things to prepare, and worked extremely hard on this specific application- I didn’t do it alone but I’m very proud to have contributed a large part of the work that helped us get here. Thank you to everyone who believes in the mission and work we do at Shop Class, your love and support go further in Oak Park ?

I’m excited to announce that we (CADclass) have won the Sacramento Innovation Grant made possible by the City of Sacramento! We’ll be giving away 3D printers, computers, and connecting local innovators with training resources and mentorship necessary to bring ideas to life. All individuals in the Sacramento region interested in design, 3D printing, and product development are encouraged to apply. Applicants will be selected based on their enthusiasm for innovation. One year in leadership at shop class- It was almost exactly 365 days ago I took up the torch of leadership at Community Shop Class - In August 2022 I wandered in looking to trade storage and tools to make sculptures for social media and website work. By New Years it was evident the communtiy needed to intervene, to keep the doors open, that we needed to collectively fight for this resource- I felt positioned to do something for once- so I joined forces with countless leaders, community advocates, supporters, artists, learners, teachers, and neighbors to bring you this: A neighborhood learning center; an Oak Park oasis designed to cultivate and replenish the communtiy- with knowledge, resources, development and garner neighborly community. We did it!! We made it through the year, designed a summer program, created new classes, paid our interns, and managed to fix a few walls and pipes along the way…I can’t tell you how unbelievable it is, and how greatful I am to have learned leadership this way. I learned with people, community, open doors-in a place where who I am is celebrated. A unique place for me and so many others- Cheers to 2024 ???
