One of my first official engagements since being appointed to the Three Rivers Commission Workforce Development Board of Directors was to align with fellow leaders in Georgia and articulate our voice during the NSC Skills Summit. "It was an immense honor to receive a Challenge Coin from United States Senator Jon Ossoff during my most recent visit to the Capitol as part of a leadership delegation from the Three Rivers Commission Workforce Development Board. We were working diligently on the reauthorization of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), legislation that is crucial for empowering organizations to create greater value for their employees and the communities they serve. If you lead people or envision leadership in your future this article really illustrates the crossroads that we find ourselves approaching. Many of the “levers” that have traditionally been deployed to obtain compliance from our workforce, is no longer as affective or quite frankly… just doesn’t work any longer. Today’s workforce want to be led by LEADERS, not managed or handled and definitely not “Bossed” around by a Boss or Supervisor…. When we think of leaders… here is the face yourself in the mirror question, because you can put on a mask and fool me, fool your office but if you have this conversation while staring yourself in the eye in the mirror, the true response will reveal itself. So here’s the question…. Why do people follow you? 1. Because of your title/position? 2. Because you have built a relationship with them? 3. Because of what you do for the organization… sometimes called production? 4. Because you have faith in them and are secure enough in your own skin to develop them as a leader and not feel threatened? 5. Because your influence transcends your organization and industry? From my vantage point having worked alongside many different levels of leadership, most leaders hang around the production area (3). However to increase productivity and increase engagement while promoting a safe space for innovation leaders must be willing to challenge themselves to rise to level 4 and 5. You know you’re headed on the right path when don’t wait until you’re ready to retire to start looking for your replacement. My most sincere desire is that this collection of insights from my years as an executive coach, leader, trainer and student of human behavior provides some value and I welcome your input and thoughts.
